A problem in VirtualBox lets someone who already has strong access to the computer make the program stop working if another person performs a certain action, which can shut down all virtual machines running on that computer.

What it actually does

Local high-privileged attacker with console access can trigger a hang or repeatable crash of the VirtualBox process by inducing another user to perform a specific interaction, resulting in complete denial of service to all running virtual machines.

Why it matters to the business

Virtual machine hosts can be forced offline without warning, interrupting workloads, halting development or testing environments, and requiring manual restarts that extend downtime.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker who already has a privileged local account on the host logs in, then social-engineers or waits for a second user to perform an action that exercises the vulnerable code path inside the VirtualBox core component, causing the process to hang or crash.

How to fix it

Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 6.1.46 or later for the 6.1 branch and to 7.0.10 or later for the 7.0 branch. Until patches can be applied, restrict interactive access to the host and monitor for unexpected VirtualBox process terminations.

How to confirm the fix worked

Run the VirtualBox --version command on each host and confirm the installed release is at or above the fixed versions; additionally verify that running VMs remain stable under normal multi-user interaction scenarios.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local high-privileged access on the host running VirtualBox
  2. Position the environment so another user will trigger the interaction
  3. Induce the required user action to reach the flawed code path
  4. Cause the VirtualBox process to enter a hung or crashed state

How to detect it

Review system and application logs for abrupt VirtualBox process terminations or kernel messages indicating a hang; correlate timestamps with interactive user sessions on the host.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching hosts that run production or customer-facing VMs first
  • Inventory all VirtualBox installations and schedule upgrades within the next maintenance window
  • Reduce the number of users with direct host logon rights where feasible
  • Enable centralized logging of VirtualBox process exits for post-patch validation

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 6.1.46 and Prior to 7.0.10. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle VM VirtualBox. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 4.2 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).
