What it actually does

Local high-privileged process gains unauthorized read access to critical VirtualBox data structures and guest memory images, crossing scope boundaries to affect host-level or additional product data stores.

Why it matters to the business

High-privileged users on the virtualization host can extract sensitive VM data, raising risk of confidentiality breaches across multiple systems and workloads; upgrade urgency is moderate given low EPSS and absence from known exploited lists.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with administrative logon to the host where VirtualBox runs invokes the vulnerable Core component, leverages the local privilege-escalation flaw to bypass isolation, and reads arbitrary critical data that may reside in other VMs or host components.

How to fix it

Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 6.1.44 or 7.0.8 (or later) on all affected hosts; verify the installed build after restart of the service and guests.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running VirtualBox binary version matches or exceeds 6.1.44 / 7.0.8; re-execute any prior local test cases that exercised Core data paths to ensure isolation is enforced.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain high-privileged local account on the VirtualBox host
  2. Execute code or commands that trigger the Core component flaw
  3. Escalate to read access across scope boundary
  4. Extract target data from VirtualBox-managed objects

How to detect it

Review host authentication logs for unexpected administrative sessions around VirtualBox processes; inspect process creation events for unusual command lines invoking VirtualBox binaries; correlate with data-access anomalies reported by guest operating systems.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching of internet-facing or multi-tenant hosts within 30 days
  • Audit local administrative accounts on all VirtualBox hosts
  • Review guest-to-host data sharing policies to reduce blast radius
  • Monitor EPSS and KEV updates for any future elevation in exploit maturity

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 6.1.44 and Prior to 7.0.8. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. While the vulnerability is in Oracle VM VirtualBox, attacks may significantly impact additional products (scope change). Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all Oracle VM VirtualBox accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 6.0 (Confidentiality impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N).
