What it actually does
Local low-privileged process can trigger a difficult-to-reach code path in the VirtualBox core that results in arbitrary code execution inside the VirtualBox process, crossing the guest-host boundary because of the reported scope change.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation on a virtualization host can allow an attacker who already has a foothold on the system to seize control of running virtual machines and the management layer, potentially exposing all guest workloads and the underlying infrastructure.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with an existing low-privileged account on the virtualization host logs in, then exercises the flaw in the VirtualBox core component to elevate privileges and achieve full takeover of the VirtualBox process, after which further actions against guests or the host become possible.
How to fix it
Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 6.1.44 or 7.0.8 (or later) on every affected host; remove or isolate any hosts that cannot be updated promptly.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inventory all hosts running VirtualBox, verify the installed version string matches or exceeds 6.1.44 / 7.0.8, and confirm that the updated binaries are loaded by inspecting running processes and package metadata.
Typical attack path
- Obtain low-privileged interactive access to the virtualization host
- Identify a running VirtualBox instance meeting the affected version criteria
- Trigger the vulnerable code path through crafted input or API calls
- Escalate to full control of the VirtualBox process and attached VMs
How to detect it
Review authentication logs on virtualization hosts for unexpected interactive sessions, monitor VirtualBox process creation and unusual child processes, and inspect system audit trails for privilege-escalation indicators around the time of any anomalous VM behavior.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching of internet-facing or high-value virtualization hosts within the CISA-recommended window if applicable
- Restrict interactive logons to virtualization hosts to the smallest possible set of accounts
- Enable hypervisor-level logging and forward events to a central SIEM for anomaly detection
The record
Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 6.1.44 and Prior to 7.0.8. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. While the vulnerability is in Oracle VM VirtualBox, attacks may significantly impact additional products (scope change). Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Oracle VM VirtualBox. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.8 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H).
