What it actually does
Use-after-free in multiple Android Linux kernel functions allows memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution in kernel context.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers who already have a foothold on a device can gain full control of the system without user interaction, increasing risk of data theft, persistent malware, and device takeover on unpatched Android deployments.
How an attack unfolds
With public exploits available, an attacker with local code execution on an affected Android device invokes one of the vulnerable kernel functions to trigger the use-after-free, corrupts adjacent memory structures, and escalates to root privileges.
How to fix it
Apply the latest Android security patches or kernel updates that address A-257443051; where patches are unavailable, restrict untrusted local code execution and monitor for anomalous kernel behavior.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm devices are running patched Android builds containing the upstream kernel fix for A-257443051; review kernel version strings and security bulletin dates against the February 2023 Android security update.
Typical attack path
- Gain local code execution on the target Android device
- Invoke vulnerable kernel functions to trigger use-after-free
- Manipulate freed memory to corrupt kernel data structures
- Escalate privileges to root or kernel level
- Install persistent implants or exfiltrate data
How to detect it
Review system and kernel logs for unexpected crashes or privilege changes around the vulnerable functions; correlate with process execution that reaches kernel memory management paths.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize deployment of the February 2023 Android security update across the fleet
- Disable sideloading and restrict local application execution on high-risk devices until patched
- Monitor kernel crash and privilege-escalation telemetry for signs of exploitation
The record
In several functions of the Android Linux kernel, there is a possible way to corrupt memory due to a use after free. This could lead to local escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.Product: AndroidVersions: Android kernelAndroid ID: A-257443051References: Upstream kernel
