What it actually does
Memory leak combined with potential divide-by-zero and integer overflow in the Linux kernel V4L2 vivid test driver when handling VIDIOC_S_DV_TIMINGS and related ioctls, resulting in local denial of service via kernel panic or resource exhaustion.
Why it matters to the business
A local user can crash affected Linux systems, interrupting services and requiring manual restarts; the issue is limited to systems with vivid test code enabled and carries low urgency given absent exploitation in the wild.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker obtains local access on a system where the vivid module is present, then repeatedly invokes VIDIOC_S_DV_TIMINGS or similar ioctls with crafted parameters to trigger arithmetic errors and memory leaks that culminate in a kernel crash.
How to fix it
Apply the Linux kernel commit c9c3395d5e3dcc6daee66c6908354d47bf98cb0c or any later mainline version that resolves the vivid driver flaws; disable the vivid module when test functionality is unnecessary.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit c9c3395d5e3dcc6daee66c6908354d47bf98cb0c or later; attempt the VIDIOC_S_DV_TIMINGS ioctl in a controlled environment and verify the kernel no longer panics or leaks memory.
Typical attack path
- Gain local shell or process execution on the target host
- Confirm or load the vivid test driver module
- Issue VIDIOC_S_DV_TIMINGS ioctl with malicious timing values
- Repeat calls to induce memory leak or arithmetic fault leading to panic
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for vivid or v4l2 driver oops/panic entries, unexpected memory pressure from video ioctl paths, or repeated VIDIOC_S_DV_TIMINGS failures; correlate with local user activity.
What your security team should do
- Upgrade affected kernels to a version containing commit c9c3395d5e3dcc6daee66c6908354d47bf98cb0c
- Blacklist or unload the vivid module on production systems
- Limit untrusted local accounts and monitor kernel logs for vivid-related oops messages
The record
A memory leak flaw and potential divide by zero and Integer overflow was found in the Linux kernel V4L2 and vivid test code functionality. This issue occurs when a user triggers ioctls, such as VIDIOC_S_DV_TIMINGS ioctl. This could allow a local user to crash the system if vivid test code enabled.
