What it actually does
CVE-2023-0266 is a local Linux kernel use-after-free vulnerability in the ALSA PCM/control compatibility ioctl path. The vulnerable SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_ELEM_READ32 and SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_ELEM_WRITE32 handlers lack sufficient locking around ALSA control element access, allowing a locally authenticated user to race object lifetime changes and operate on freed kernel memory. Successful exploitation can corrupt kernel memory and elevate privileges from an unprivileged local user context to kernel/ring0 execution, resulting in full confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact on the affected host.
Why it matters to the business
An attacker who already has local code execution on an affected Linux system can turn that foothold into full root-level control, allowing them to disable security tools, steal sensitive data, tamper with workloads, install persistence, or use the host for lateral movement. Because this vulnerability is listed in CISA KEV, has observed exploitation in the wild, and the remediation deadline was 2023-04-20, unpatched systems should be treated as high-priority exposure even though exploitation requires local access.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first obtains the ability to run code as a low-privileged user on an affected Linux host, such as through stolen credentials, a compromised service account, a web shell, or another application vulnerability. The attacker then interacts with ALSA sound control device interfaces, typically under /dev/snd/, and repeatedly triggers the vulnerable 32-bit compatibility ioctl operations while racing control element lifetime changes. Because the affected ioctl handlers do not hold the necessary locks, the kernel can reuse or free an ALSA control element while it is still being accessed. A reliable exploit shapes kernel heap state, turns the stale pointer access into controlled memory corruption, and then modifies kernel execution state or credentials to grant root privileges. After privilege escalation, the attacker can run commands as root, load or tamper with kernel-level components where permitted, alter logs, disable monitoring, and establish persistence.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected Linux kernels to a vendor-supported kernel build that includes upstream fix commit 56b88b50565cd8b946a2d00b0c83927b7ebb055e or later. For source-based builds from torvalds/linux, ensure the fix is present in the checked-out tree; for distribution kernels, apply the relevant security update from the OS vendor rather than relying only on the upstream commit identifier. Reboot systems after installing the patched kernel, because the vulnerable code remains active until the fixed kernel is running. If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure by limiting local shell access, restricting untrusted workloads, applying least-privilege controls, isolating multi-user systems, disabling or limiting access to ALSA sound device nodes where operationally feasible, and using MAC policies such as SELinux or AppArmor to constrain access to /dev/snd/* devices. Treat mitigations as temporary; the durable fix is a patched kernel.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm remediation by verifying that the running kernel, not merely the installed package, is updated to a vendor build containing the ALSA fix or that the source tree includes commit 56b88b50565cd8b946a2d00b0c83927b7ebb055e. On Linux systems, compare `uname -r` with the vendor security advisory for the distribution and kernel flavor in use, then confirm the host has been rebooted into the patched kernel. For custom kernels, inspect the kernel source or build metadata for the fixed ALSA control locking changes associated with commit 56b88b50565cd8b946a2d00b0c83927b7ebb055e. Validate exposure reduction by checking permissions on /dev/snd/controlC* and confirming untrusted users or containers cannot access ALSA device nodes unless required. Vulnerability scanners should flag systems running affected kernel versions and clear only after the active kernel contains the fix.
Typical attack path
- Gain local code execution as a non-root user on an affected Linux host.
- Confirm that the running kernel includes the vulnerable ALSA control ioctl implementation and that ALSA sound device nodes are reachable.
- Open ALSA control device interfaces such as /dev/snd/controlC* from the local process.
- Race SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_ELEM_READ32 or SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_ELEM_WRITE32 operations against ALSA control element changes to trigger a use-after-free condition.
- Use kernel heap manipulation to convert the use-after-free into controlled kernel memory corruption.
- Escalate the local process to root or otherwise obtain kernel-level privileges.
- Use elevated privileges to disable defenses, access protected data, deploy persistence, or move laterally.
How to detect it
This vulnerability is a local kernel privilege-escalation flaw, so direct exploitation may leave little or no application-layer evidence. Investigations should combine kernel logs, audit telemetry, endpoint process history, authentication logs, and file integrity data. Review `dmesg`, journald, `/var/log/kern.log`, `/var/log/messages`, and crash dumps for kernel oops, panics, slab corruption, general protection faults, or call traces involving ALSA control functions such as `snd_ctl_elem_read`, `snd_ctl_elem_write`, or `snd_ctl_ioctl`. Use auditd or EDR telemetry to look for unusual non-audio processes opening `/dev/snd/controlC*` or making ioctl calls associated with ALSA control element read/write operations, especially from temporary directories, web service users, build agents, containers, or newly created low-privileged accounts. Correlate suspected exploitation windows with sudden privilege changes: unexpected root shells, new SUID/SGID binaries, modified sudoers files, new systemd services, new cron jobs, kernel module changes, disabled security agents, or log tampering. Where available, inspect eBPF, syscall, or audit logs for repeated access to ALSA device nodes followed by execution as UID 0. Because named threat actor context in the input is generic rather than a specific campaign attribution, detections should focus on the exploit behavior and post-exploitation artifacts rather than actor-specific infrastructure.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all affected Linux systems because the vulnerability is in CISA KEV and has documented exploitation in the wild.
- Identify internet-facing, multi-user, shared compute, CI/CD runner, VDI, workstation, and container-host systems where local privilege escalation would materially increase attacker impact.
- Upgrade to a supported kernel containing upstream commit 56b88b50565cd8b946a2d00b0c83927b7ebb055e or the equivalent distribution backport, then reboot into the fixed kernel.
- Temporarily restrict access to ALSA device nodes such as /dev/snd/controlC* on systems where sound functionality is not required.
- Review recent activity from low-privileged accounts on affected hosts, especially where there are signs of subsequent root access, kernel crashes, or suspicious interaction with /dev/snd/.
- Harden local execution paths by reducing unnecessary shell access, tightening sudo policies, isolating untrusted workloads, and enforcing SELinux/AppArmor profiles.
- Add detection coverage for abnormal ioctl-heavy access to ALSA control devices, unexpected privilege transitions, kernel oops/panic messages involving ALSA control functions, and post-exploitation behavior such as new root-owned persistence artifacts.
- Because the KEV remediation due date has passed, track remaining vulnerable systems as overdue risk exceptions until patched or decommissioned.
The record
A use after free vulnerability exists in the ALSA PCM package in the Linux Kernel. SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_ELEM_{READ|WRITE}32 is missing locks that can be used in a use-after-free that can result in a priviledge escalation to gain ring0 access from the system user. We recommend upgrading past commit 56b88b50565cd8b946a2d00b0c83927b7ebb055e
