What it actually does
Out-of-bounds write in the kernel-mode display driver handler allows an attacker-controlled value to overwrite adjacent memory, resulting in denial of service via kernel panic or blue-screen and limited data tampering through memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using affected NVIDIA GPU drivers may experience unexpected crashes or graphics-related data corruption, leading to lost work, reduced productivity on workstations and servers, and potential integrity issues for rendered or processed data.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker with low-privileged access crafts input that reaches the vulnerable kernel handler, triggers the out-of-bounds write, and either crashes the system or corrupts driver-managed structures to tamper with display or compute operations.
How to fix it
Update the NVIDIA GPU Display Driver to the latest version available from NVIDIA that resolves the out-of-bounds write; apply vendor-supplied hotfixes or driver branches that address kernel-mode handler bounds checking; where immediate patching is not possible, restrict untrusted local accounts and monitor for driver-related crashes.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed driver version is newer than the vulnerable release by checking NVIDIA Control Panel or driver properties; re-execute graphics workloads that previously triggered the handler and verify absence of kernel faults or memory corruption symptoms.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on a system with a vulnerable NVIDIA GPU driver
- Load or interact with graphics APIs or direct driver calls that exercise the kernel-mode handler
- Supply malformed parameters that cause the out-of-bounds write
- Observe denial-of-service crash or attempt to leverage memory corruption for further tampering
How to detect it
Review system and kernel logs for unexpected NVIDIA driver crashes or bug-check codes around the time of suspected activity; correlate graphics API calls or user sessions with subsequent reboots or display anomalies; examine any available crash dumps for signs of memory writes originating from the display driver.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize driver updates on all affected NVIDIA GPU systems within standard change windows
- Inventory systems using the listed affected products and schedule phased rollouts
- Enable kernel crash logging and driver telemetry to detect anomalous behavior during rollout
- Review local privilege boundaries and limit non-administrator access where driver interaction is unnecessary
The record
NVIDIA GPU Display Driver for Windows and Linux contains a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer handler, where an out-of-bounds write can lead to denial of service and data tampering.
