What it actually does
Vulnerability in the kernel mode layer handler of the NVIDIA GPU Display Driver for Linux allows an attacker to trigger code execution, denial of service, privilege escalation, information disclosure, and data tampering from a local context.
Why it matters to the business
Organizations running affected NVIDIA virtual GPU software or Linux kernel drivers face elevated risk of system compromise, service disruption, and unauthorized data access on Linux-based systems with NVIDIA hardware; the flaw has remained unpatched in listed versions for over three years with stable but low exploitation probability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local low-privileged access on a Linux system using the vulnerable NVIDIA driver crafts input to the kernel mode layer handler, triggering memory corruption or logic flaws that enable escalation to higher privileges, arbitrary code execution, or extraction of sensitive data.
How to fix it
Update the NVIDIA GPU Display Driver and any associated virtual GPU components to the latest vendor-released versions that address the kernel mode layer handler issue; where updates are unavailable, isolate affected systems and restrict local access until patches can be applied.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify driver version numbers against vendor security bulletins, confirm the kernel mode handler no longer accepts malformed inputs that previously triggered the described impacts, and retest privilege boundaries on sample systems.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local low-privileged access to a Linux host with the vulnerable NVIDIA driver
- Identify and interact with the kernel mode layer handler via user-space interfaces
- Supply malicious input to trigger the vulnerability
- Achieve code execution or privilege escalation within the kernel context
- Perform follow-on actions such as data exfiltration, tampering, or denial of service
How to detect it
Review system logs for unusual kernel module activity or crashes related to the NVIDIA driver, monitor for unexpected privilege changes or process spawns from graphics-related components, and inspect audit trails for anomalous access to GPU device files.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize inventory of all Linux systems using NVIDIA vGPU or display drivers and schedule immediate updates
- Apply least-privilege controls and monitor for anomalous kernel interactions until remediation is complete
- Review and enforce driver update policies across the environment to prevent recurrence of long-unpatched exposure
The record
NVIDIA GPU Display Driver for Linux contains a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer handler which may lead to code execution, denial of service, escalation of privileges, information disclosure, and data tampering.
