What it actually does
Sign conversion error in the NVIDIA GPU kernel mode driver casts an unsigned value to a signed primitive, enabling out-of-bounds memory access that can cause denial of service or partial information disclosure.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running affected NVIDIA GPU drivers in virtualized or enterprise Linux environments face risk of crashes or exposure of sensitive kernel memory, potentially disrupting workloads on NVIDIA vGPU, Citrix Hypervisor, RHEL KVM, and VMware vSphere deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local user access supplies a crafted input to the driver that triggers the sign conversion flaw, resulting in invalid memory operations that either crash the system or leak kernel data.
How to fix it
Upgrade the NVIDIA GPU Display Driver for Linux to the latest patched release for each affected product line; apply vendor-specific updates for Citrix Hypervisor, Red Hat Enterprise Linux KVM, and VMware vSphere environments; monitor NVIDIA security bulletins for driver versions that resolve the sign conversion issue.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed driver versions against current NVIDIA release notes; run kernel module integrity checks and attempt controlled reproduction of the sign conversion condition in a test environment; confirm absence of the vulnerable code path after updates.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access on a Linux system with the vulnerable NVIDIA GPU driver
- Craft and submit malicious input via the kernel interface to trigger the sign conversion
- Trigger memory corruption leading to DoS or information disclosure
- Escalate impact through repeated exploitation or chaining with other local flaws
How to detect it
Search system and kernel logs for NVIDIA driver crashes or unexpected memory faults around GPU-related processes; review audit logs for anomalous local interactions with the driver interface; correlate with any observed denial-of-service events on affected hosts.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching NVIDIA GPU drivers across all Linux-based virtualization hosts given the local attack vector and memory corruption family
- Restrict local user access on systems hosting NVIDIA GPUs until updates are applied
- Review EPSS and exploit maturity data (currently low) and schedule remediation within standard change windows
- Audit downstream dependents in the affected virtualization ecosystem for inherited exposure
The record
NVIDIA GPU Display Driver for Linux contains a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer, where sign conversion issuescasting an unsigned primitive to signed may lead to denial of service or information disclosure.
