What it actually does
Vulnerability in the kernel-mode layer handler of the NVIDIA GPU display driver allows a local process to trigger denial of service, privilege escalation, information disclosure, or arbitrary data modification through improper input handling or memory operations.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using affected NVIDIA GPU drivers face risk of crashes, unauthorized code execution with elevated rights, exposure of sensitive data, and tampering that can disrupt operations or compromise host integrity.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access and limited user privileges crafts malicious input to the kernel-mode handler, triggering the flaw to elevate privileges, read or alter kernel memory, or crash the driver and dependent graphics stack.
How to fix it
Update the NVIDIA GPU Display Driver to the latest version published after April 2023 that resolves the kernel-mode handler issue; apply vendor-supplied patches for Windows and Linux as they become available and test graphics workloads after installation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed driver version against the current NVIDIA release notes, confirm the vulnerable kernel-mode component is no longer present via driver properties or vendor tools, and retest affected graphics applications for stability.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on a system with an affected NVIDIA GPU driver
- Load or invoke a process that interacts with the vulnerable kernel-mode handler
- Supply crafted parameters or memory structures to trigger the flaw
- Achieve privilege escalation, data access, or denial of service
How to detect it
Review system and driver logs for unexpected kernel-mode faults or crashes involving the NVIDIA display driver, monitor for anomalous privilege changes or memory access patterns from graphics-related processes, and inspect for post-exploitation artifacts such as modified driver files or unexpected kernel dumps.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize driver updates on all endpoints with NVIDIA GPUs, especially workstations and servers handling sensitive workloads
- Restrict local user privileges where possible to reduce attack surface until patches are applied
- Monitor NVIDIA security bulletins for subsequent fixes and integrate driver version checks into asset management
The record
NVIDIA GPU Display Driver for Windows and Linux contains a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer handler which may lead to denial of service, escalation of privileges, information disclosure, and data tampering.
