Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A flaw in how Linux handles certain USB WiFi devices during unplug could let attackers crash the computer or gain extra access if they can plug in hardware.

What it actually does

Use-after-free in ath9k_hif_usb_disconnect() when ath9k_destroy_wmi() accesses drv_priv after ieee80211_free_hw() has already freed it during ath9k_htc_hw_deinit on USB disconnect.

Why it matters to the business

Kernel memory corruption or crashes on Linux systems using ath9k USB WiFi adapters can cause denial of service or allow local privilege escalation, disrupting operations on affected hardware.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker triggers a USB disconnect sequence on an ath9k USB WiFi device, causing the driver to call ath9k_hif_usb_disconnect with an incorrect free order; this leads to ath9k_destroy_wmi reading freed memory during urb callback or wmi access.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to include commit 99ff971b62e5bd5dee65bbe9777375206f5db791 which reorders ath9k_destroy_wmi before ieee80211_free_hw and ensures urbs are killed first.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the fix commit is present in the running kernel source tree; reproduce USB disconnect on ath9k hardware and verify absence of use-after-free in kernel logs.

Typical attack path

  1. Connect an ath9k USB WiFi adapter to a Linux system
  2. Initiate USB disconnect via physical removal, suspend, or hub event
  3. Kernel invokes ath9k_hif_usb_disconnect and ath9k_htc_hw_deinit
  4. ieee80211_free_hw frees drv_priv before ath9k_destroy_wmi runs
  5. Use-after-free triggers KASAN-detected access or memory corruption

How to detect it

Scan kernel logs and dmesg for KASAN use-after-free reports referencing ath9k_destroy_wmi, ath9k_hif_usb_disconnect, or usb_hub_wq events during device removal.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the referenced kernel commit or upgrade to a fixed stable release as soon as possible
  • Limit physical USB access on systems using ath9k hardware until patched
  • Enable KASAN or similar memory debugging in test environments to catch similar issues

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: ath9k: Fix use-after-free in ath9k_hif_usb_disconnect() This patch fixes a use-after-free in ath9k that occurs in ath9k_hif_usb_disconnect() when ath9k_destroy_wmi() is trying to access 'drv_priv' that has already been freed by ieee80211_free_hw(), called by ath9k_htc_hw_deinit(). The patch moves ath9k_destroy_wmi() before ieee80211_free_hw(). Note that urbs from the driver should be killed before freeing 'wmi' with ath9k_destroy_wmi() as their callbacks will access 'wmi'.
