Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A bug in the Linux kernel can make virtual machines crash the entire host computer when they try to free large amounts of memory, and updating the kernel fixes it.

What it actually does

The flaw allows a guest to trigger a kernel BUG during IOMMU unmap of very large memory regions in vhost_vdpa because vhost_vdpa_unmap did not restrict unmaps to only entries present in the iotlb, leading to invalid domain_unmap calls.

Why it matters to the business

Systems running affected Linux kernels with vhost_vdpa and vIOMMU can experience sudden kernel crashes and reboots when guests perform large memory unmaps, disrupting virtual machine operation and requiring restarts.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker controlling a guest VM sends an IOTLB message requesting unmap of a very large memory region; the vhost_vdpa code path calls into the IOMMU unmap routine without validating against saved iotlb entries, hitting the domain_unmap assertion and crashing the host kernel.

How to fix it

Upgrade to a fixed kernel containing commit 26b7400c89b81e2f6de4f224ba1fdf06f293de31 or apply the Debian package updates (linux 4.11.11-1 or later) that introduce vhost_vdpa_general_unmap to restrict unmaps to iotlb-tracked memory only.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains the fix commit or package version, then test vIOMMU guest unmap operations of large regions to ensure no BUG or panic occurs in domain_unmap.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker gains control of a guest VM using vhost_vdpa with vIOMMU enabled
  2. Guest issues large memory unmap request via IOTLB message
  3. vhost_vdpa_process_iotlb_msg calls vhost_vdpa_unmap without iotlb filtering
  4. intel_iommu_unmap_pages invokes domain_unmap on invalid range
  5. Kernel hits BUG at domain_unmap and panics

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and crash dumps for the exact BUG signature at domain_unmap+0x48 combined with the call trace through vhost_vdpa_unmap and vhost_vdpa_process_iotlb_msg; absence of such oops after large unmap activity indicates the issue was not triggered.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching hosts using vhost_vdpa with vIOMMU to the fixed versions immediately due to crash risk in production VMs
  • Monitor for kernel oops logs matching the domain_unmap BUG signature until patches are deployed
  • Review virtualization configurations to limit exposure of vhost_vdpa devices to untrusted guests

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vhost_vdpa: fix the crash in unmap a large memory While testing in vIOMMU, sometimes Guest will unmap very large memory, which will cause the crash. To fix this, add a new function vhost_vdpa_general_unmap(). This function will only unmap the memory that saved in iotlb.
