What it actually does
damon_sysfs_set_schemes() incorrectly assumes a DAMON context has zero schemes when called for online updates, causing it to create and add duplicate schemes instead of updating, removing, or adding to existing ones, resulting in higher than intended memory footprint without actual leakage.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using DAMON with online scheme tuning may experience unexpected memory overhead; low urgency given absence from KEV, ransomware use, and minimal EPSS with flat trend over 726 days since publication.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access to a DAMON-enabled kernel could interact with the sysfs interface to trigger repeated scheme additions during online tuning, but the issue is a functional logic error rather than a remotely exploitable security flaw with no known threat actors or campaigns.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a kernel containing commit f98d1f2a36ad7ab48fb4cf73ca14e7b19482fd4d (or equivalent fixed commit c3706bd882b3d61b353e4193f7d2dcfabd0c9a8e for downstream projects) to correct the scheme handling assumption in damon_sysfs_set_schemes().

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/damon/sysfs: fix wrong empty schemes assumption under online tuning in damon_sysfs_set_schemes() Commit da87878010e5 ("mm/damon/sysfs: support online inputs update") made 'damon_sysfs_set_schemes()' to be called for running DAMON context, which could have schemes. In the case, DAMON sysfs interface is supposed to update, remove, or add schemes to reflect the sysfs files. However, the code is assuming the DAMON context wouldn't have schemes at all, and therefore creates and adds new schemes. As a result, the code doesn't work as intended for online schemes tuning and could have more than expected memory footprint. The schemes are all in the DAMON context, so it doesn't leak the memory, though. Remove the wrong asssumption (the DAMON context wouldn't have schemes) in 'damon_sysfs_set_schemes()' to fix the bug.
