What it actually does
Use-after-free in the slcan CAN driver where tx_work is scheduled but freed without flushing, leading to NULL pointer dereference during workqueue processing in process_one_work.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes and system instability on Linux hosts using slcan interfaces can cause denial of service, unplanned reboots, and operational disruption; low EPSS and no KEV status indicate limited active exploitation risk despite 726 days since publication.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker interacts with the slcan tty interface to stuff bytes and force wakeup without setting the netdev UP; slcan_close omits flush_work unlike slcan_netdev_close, allowing the scheduled work to execute after memory release and trigger the crash.
How to fix it
Add flush_work call to slcan_close() to ensure work is always flushed; apply kernel patches addressing the moved flush_work logic from the Fixes commit. No matching fixed versions were derivable from provided data for listed products.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inspect slcan driver source for flush_work invocation inside slcan_close and confirm absence of the original scheduling-without-flush path; test with LTP pty03 or equivalent workload.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or permissions to open slcan tty device
- Manipulate netdev and tty states to schedule tx_work without proper flush
- Trigger workqueue execution to dereference freed structure
- Cause kernel NULL pointer dereference and crash
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for slcan-related NULL pointer dereference oops mentioning workqueue and process_one_work; correlate with tty or CAN device activity preceding crashes.
- BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference
- process_one_work
- slcan_netdev_close
- flush_work
- kworker.*events
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates containing the slcan flush_work fix on all affected systems
- Restrict unprivileged access to CAN and tty devices using slcan
- Monitor kernel logs for slcan-related oops and workqueue crashes
- Evaluate disabling slcan module if CAN functionality is unused

While slcan_netdev_close() (netdev side) calls flush_work(&sl->tx_work), slcan_close() (tty side) does not. So when the netdev is never set UP, but the tty is stuffed with bytes and forced to wakeup write, the work is scheduled, but never flushed. So add an additional flush_work() to slcan_close() to be sure the work is flushed under all circumstances. The Fixes commit below moved flush_work() from slcan_close() to slcan_netdev_close(). What was the rationale behind it? Maybe we can drop the one in slcan_netdev_close()? I see the same pattern in can327. So it perhaps needs the very same fix.
