What it actually does
Race condition in io_uring allows io_tctx_exit_cb to dereference a NULL pointer in current->io_uring when task_work is queued during exec cancellation and executed on user-mode exit instead of the io_uring cancel loop.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel panic crashes the system, causing denial of service and potential loss of in-progress work on affected Linux hosts; low exploitability keeps immediate risk modest but still requires prompt patching.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a program that uses io_uring rings while simultaneously triggering execve; the unsynchronized addition of task_work from io_ring_exit_work versus cancellation paths lets the exit callback run with a cleared io_uring pointer, dereferencing NULL and panicking the kernel.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix that adds the NULL check in io_tctx_exit_cb and the accompanying comment; rebuild and deploy a kernel containing commit 70503b79f5db75a1eac9bf55826038a6ee5a16d5 (or equivalent backport) on all affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the patched kernel no longer contains the vulnerable io_tctx_exit_cb code path; run syzkaller reproducers or targeted stress tests that combine io_uring with execve under panic_on_warn to verify absence of the NULL dereference.
Typical attack path
- Create and register an io_uring instance
- Trigger execve or similar signal delivery that cancels pending work
- Force the io_tctx_exit_cb task_work to be queued concurrently
- Arrange for the callback to execute during syscall exit to user mode rather than inside io_uring_cancel_generic
- Read of NULL pointer at offset 0x138 triggers KASAN report and panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for KASAN null-ptr-deref reports citing io_tctx_exit_cb, task_work_run, and get_signal; look for processes that combine io_uring setup with execve or signal handling immediately before a panic.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on any system exposing io_uring to untrusted workloads
- Enable panic_on_warn and monitor for related KASAN reports during testing
- Restrict io_uring usage via seccomp or LSM where not required
- Track EPSS trend and re-evaluate if exploit maturity increases

This happens because the adding of task_work from io_ring_exit_work() isn't synchronized with canceling all work items from eg exec. The execution of the two are ordered in that they are both run by the task itself, but if io_tctx_exit_cb() is queued while we're canceling all work items off exec AND gets executed when the task exits to userspace rather than in the main loop in io_uring_cancel_generic(), then we can find current->io_uring == NULL and hit the above crash. It's safe to add this NULL check here, because the execution of the two paths are done by the task itself. [axboe: add code comment and also put an explanation in the commit msg]
