What it actually does
Incorrect setting of s_off and t_off in copy_map_value allows bpf_map_update_elem to overwrite a bpf_timer object when both bpf_spin_lock and bpf_timer coexist in a map value, producing a kernel memory corruption and crash.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems and Android devices using BPF maps that combine spinlocks with timers may suffer unexpected kernel panics, causing service outages and requiring reboots; the issue affects the broad Linux ecosystem but carries low exploitation urgency given its age and limited EPSS.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access loads a BPF program or map containing both a spinlock and timer, then invokes bpf_map_update_elem; the flawed copy overwrites the timer, and subsequent timer operations such as bpf_timer_cancel trigger a spinlock corruption and kernel panic via KASAN-detected memory writes.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to commit 719d1c2524c89ada78c4c9202641c1d9e942a322 or later; for Android apply the SoCVersion fix dated 2022-02-05. Rebuild and redeploy any custom BPF programs after the kernel update.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains the referenced commit or SoC patch; execute the timer_crash test case from test_progs and verify absence of KASAN reports or panics; inspect copy_map_value source to ensure both offsets are correctly initialized.
Typical attack path
- Gain local user access on an affected Linux or Android system
- Create or attach to a BPF map that declares both bpf_spin_lock and bpf_timer fields
- Call bpf_map_update_elem with crafted value data
- Trigger timer operations that dereference the overwritten object
- Induce kernel panic and denial of service
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for KASAN user-memory-access reports involving __pv_queued_spin_lock_slowpath, bpf_timer_cancel, and bpf_map_update_elem; correlate with BPF program loads via audit logs or /sys/kernel/debug/tracing.
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel or Android patch at the earliest maintenance window
- Restrict unprivileged BPF map creation via kernel.unprivileged_bpf_disabled or CAP_BPF scoping
- Monitor kernel logs for bpf_timer_cancel and __pv_queued_spin_lock_slowpath crashes
- Track EPSS and KEV updates for any change in exploit maturity
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Fix crash due to incorrect copy_map_value When both bpf_spin_lock and bpf_timer are present in a BPF map value, copy_map_value needs to skirt both objects when copying a value into and out of the map. However, the current code does not set both s_off and t_off in copy_map_value, which leads to a crash when e.g. bpf_spin_lock is placed in map value with bpf_timer, as bpf_map_update_elem call will be able to overwrite the other timer object. When the issue is not fixed, an overwriting can produce the following splat: [root@(none) bpf]# ./test_progs -t timer_crash [ 15.930339] bpf_testmod: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.
