What it actually does

Kernel oops (NULL pointer dereference) in RISC-V low-level entry code when trace_hardirqs_on/off are called without proper frame pointer setup in assembly paths such as resume_kernel and restore_all.

Why it matters to the business

Systems running affected Linux kernels on RISC-V hardware may crash or fail to boot when the irqoff latency tracer is enabled, leading to downtime in development, testing, or specialized embedded deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker or administrator enables the irqoff tracer at compile or boot time; on the next interrupt state transition the low-level assembly entry code invokes trace_hardirqs_on/off without a valid frame pointer, causing the generated __builtin_return_address(1) access to dereference an invalid address and trigger a kernel panic.

How to fix it

Update to a kernel containing commit 9e2dbc31e367d08ee299a0d8aeb498cb2e12a1c3 or later; rebuild with the irqoff tracer only after applying the wrapper fix for trace_hardirqs_on/off.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the fix commit is present in the running kernel source; attempt to boot with irqoff tracer enabled and verify no oops occurs on interrupt tracing paths.

Typical attack path

  1. Compile kernel with CONFIG_IRQSOFF_TRACER enabled on RISC-V
  2. Boot the system or trigger an interrupt state change
  3. trace_hardirqs_on/off executes from restore_all without valid $fp
  4. ld instruction performs invalid memory access leading to oops

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and boot messages for oops strings referencing trace_hardirqs_on, restore_all, and NULL pointer dereference at low addresses on RISC-V platforms.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the referenced upstream commit to all RISC-V kernel builds
  • Disable irqoff tracer in production configurations until patched
  • Monitor for kernel oops logs containing trace_hardirqs_on during boot

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: riscv: fix oops caused by irqsoff latency tracer The trace_hardirqs_{on,off}() require the caller to setup frame pointer properly. This because these two functions use macro 'CALLER_ADDR1' (aka. __builtin_return_address(1)) to acquire caller info.
