What it actually does

Race condition in arm-smmu IOMMU handling allows DMA domain to be unregistered while network transmit or receive operations are still in flight, resulting in NULL pointer dereference in iommu_get_dma_domain during device removal on shutdown.

Why it matters to the business

Systems may experience kernel panic and abrupt crash during reboot or shutdown sequences when network traffic is present, leading to potential service interruption, incomplete shutdowns, and operational downtime on affected Linux deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with the ability to generate network traffic (such as ping floods) combined with a forced fast reboot triggers the window where DMA mappings are torn down while packets are still being processed, causing the NULL dereference and kernel panic.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to version 6.1.7 or later, or apply the fix from commit a1b9c7b1978aacf4b2f33e34bde1e2bb80b8497a in the stable tree which prevents IOMMU domain unregistration during shutdown.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel is at least 6.1.7; verify the presence of the commit a1b9c7b1978aacf4b2f33e34bde1e2bb80b8497a in the kernel source; test shutdown under network load to ensure no NULL dereference occurs in iommu_get_dma_domain.

Typical attack path

  1. Establish network connectivity to the target system with a fixed IP address.
  2. Generate sustained network traffic such as ICMP floods from a remote host.
  3. Issue a forced fast reboot command such as reboot -f.
  4. Time the reboot to coincide with in-flight packet processing to hit the race window.
  5. Observe resulting kernel NULL pointer dereference and panic in interrupt context.

How to detect it

Search system logs and kernel crash dumps for stack traces containing iommu_get_dma_domain, dma_map_page_attrs, enetc_start_xmit, and messages indicating NULL pointer dereference or fatal exception in interrupt during shutdown or device removal sequences.

  • iommu_get_dma_domain+0x14/0x20
  • Kernel panic - not syncing: Oops: Fatal exception in interrupt
  • arm-smmu.*Removing from iommu group
  • Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000098
  • enetc_start_xmit+0x14c/0x10b0

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates to 6.1.7+ on all affected systems within standard maintenance windows.
  • Monitor for kernel panics containing iommu_get_dma_domain and enetc_start_xmit stack frames during shutdown events.
  • Apply the patch or upgrade before performing frequent forced reboots on systems with active network interfaces.
  • Review downstream kernel packages and distributions for backported fixes if using older stable branches.

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iommu/arm-smmu: Don't unregister on shutdown Michael Walle says he noticed the following stack trace while performing a shutdown with "reboot -f". He suggests he got "lucky" and just hit the correct spot for the reboot while there was a packet transmission in flight.
