What it actually does
Race condition during TIPC bearer enablement allows one thread to dereference an uninitialized monitoring pointer (mon->dom_gen) in tipc_mon_prep before tipc_mon_create allocates it, resulting in null pointer dereference and kernel panic.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected kernel crashes on Linux systems using the TIPC protocol can interrupt network-dependent services and clustered workloads, though the low EPSS score and lack of known exploitation indicate limited immediate risk to most environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access or ability to influence bearer configuration triggers tipc_enable_bearer while concurrent inbound TIPC frames cause tipc_rcv to invoke __tipc_node_link_up and tipc_link_build_proto_msg before monitoring state is initialized, leading to the panic.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 2de76d37d4a6dca9b96ea51da24d4290e6cfa1a5 or later; rebuild and reboot affected systems. Until patched, avoid enabling TIPC bearers on untrusted nodes.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 2de76d37d4a6dca9b96ea51da24d4290e6cfa1a5 via git log or package version; reproduce bearer enablement under concurrent traffic and verify absence of the tipc_mon_prep panic.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or bearer control on a TIPC-enabled Linux node
- Invoke tipc_enable_bearer to set bearer status and transmit activation messages
- Simultaneously deliver inbound TIPC frames that reach tipc_l2_rcv_msg and tipc_rcv
- Trigger the race window where tipc_mon_prep dereferences the unset pointer
- Cause kernel panic and system reboot or hang
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for the function tipc_mon_prep and stack traces containing tipc_link_build_proto_msg or __tipc_node_link_up around the time of bearer configuration changes.
- RIP: tipc_mon_prep+0x4e/0x130 [tipc]
- Call Trace: tipc_link_build_proto_msg
- u16 gen = mon->dom_gen
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel commit to all TIPC-using systems within standard change windows
- Monitor kernel crash logs for tipc-related oops until patching is complete
- Restrict TIPC bearer configuration to trusted administrative contexts
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tipc: fix kernel panic when enabling bearer When enabling a bearer on a node, a kernel panic is observed: [ 4.498085] RIP: 0010:tipc_mon_prep+0x4e/0x130 [tipc] ... This causes kernel panic. This commit fixes it by allocating the monitoring data before enabling the bearer to receive messages.
