What it actually does

The flaw triggers a kernel BUG/panic in mdiobus_free during devres release on driver unbind at shutdown when the MDIO bus was allocated via devres but not unregistered, due to device link unbinding between DSA switch and master on buses like fsl-mc.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using affected Marvell DSA switches on certain buses may experience kernel panics and crashes during power-off or reboot, causing unclean shutdowns and potential operational disruption on Linux-based network equipment.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with the ability to trigger or wait for system shutdown on vulnerable hardware (such as devices using dpaa2-eth as DSA master) causes device_links_unbind_consumers to unbind the driver, leading to improper mdiobus release and immediate kernel panic; no remote code execution path exists.

How to fix it

Upgrade to fixed kernel versions such as 5.10.103-1 (Debian 11), 5.16.10-1 (Debian 12/13), 4.9.300 (mainline), or the listed Ubuntu 5.15.0-* and 5.4.0-* packages; rebuild and reboot with patched kernels on all affected DSA deployments.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify running kernel version against the per-distro fixed versions; confirm absence of the mdiobus devres allocation pattern in mv88e6xxx driver sources; test shutdown on representative hardware with fsl-mc or similar buses.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify or control a system with mv88e6xxx DSA switch linked to a bus that unbinds drivers on shutdown
  2. Initiate or wait for kernel_power_off or reboot sequence
  3. Trigger device_links_unbind_consumers and __device_release_driver chain
  4. Reach devm_mdiobus_free without prior mdiobus_unregister causing BUG in mdiobus_free

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and crash dumps for the exact BUG line at drivers/net/phy/mdio_bus.c:677, call traces containing mdiobus_free and devm_mdiobus_free during systemd-shutdown or device_release_driver, and device link unbind messages involving mv88e6085 or fsl-mc.

  • kernel BUG at drivers/net/phy/mdio_bus.c:677
  • mdiobus_free+0x44/0x50
  • devm_mdiobus_free+0x10/0x20
  • mv88e6085.*sw_gl0: Link is Down
  • device_links_unbind_consumers
  • systemd-shutdown.*Powering off

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed fixed kernel packages immediately on all systems using mv88e6xxx DSA switches
  • Prioritize patching for devices on fsl-mc or similar shutdown-unbind buses
  • Monitor kernel logs for mdiobus BUG signatures during maintenance windows
  • Plan hardware or driver audits for other DSA drivers still using partial devres MDIO handling

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: dsa: mv88e6xxx: don't use devres for mdiobus As explained in commits: 74b6d7d13307 ("net: dsa: realtek: register the MDIO bus under devres") 5135e96a3dd2 ("net: dsa: don't allocate the slave_mii_bus using devres") mdiobus_free() will panic when called from devm_mdiobus_free() <- devres_release_all() <- __device_release_driver(), and that mdiobus was not previously unregistered. The mv88e6xxx is an MDIO device, so the initial set of constraints that I thought would cause this (I2C or SPI buses which call ->remove on ->shutdown) do not apply. But there is one more which applies here. If the DSA master itself is on a bus that calls ->remove from ->shutdown (like dpaa2-eth, which is on the fsl-mc bus), there is a device link between the switch and the DSA master, and device_links_unbind_consumers() will unbind the Marvell switch driver on shutdown. systemd-shutdown[1]: Powering off. mv88e6085 0x0000000008b96000:00 sw_gl0: Link is Down fsl-mc dpbp.9: Removing from iommu group 7 fsl-mc dpbp.8: Removing from iommu group 7 ------------[ cut here ]------------ kernel BUG at drivers/net/phy/mdio_bus.c:677! The Marvell driver already has a good structure for mdiobus removal, so just plug in mdiobus_free and get rid of devres.
