What it actually does

A race condition in the Linux kernel DSA subsystem causes a kernel panic when the DSA master netdevice unbinds during shutdown after dsa_switch_shutdown has already unregistered slave interfaces; the NETDEV_GOING_DOWN notifier handler then attempts invalid operations on those slaves.

Why it matters to the business

Reboots or shutdowns on affected Linux systems using DSA switches can trigger kernel panics, leading to unexpected crashes, delayed restarts, and reduced system availability in networking appliances and embedded devices.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access or the ability to trigger a reboot on a system with a DSA master (such as dpaa2-eth) and Marvell DSA switches can induce the panic by initiating shutdown while the master is active; the deregistration sequence calls notifiers that DSA no longer expects after slave unregistration.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit ff45899e732e57088985e3a497b1d9100571c0f5 which resets the master dsa_ptr after slaves detach and prevents the invalid notifier handling.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains commit ff45899e732e57088985e3a497b1d9100571c0f5 or later equivalent; test a controlled reboot with DSA master active and verify no panic occurs; inspect dsa_slave_netdevice_event for the updated NULL check logic.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local access or trigger a system reboot
  2. Ensure DSA master interface is up
  3. Initiate shutdown sequence (systemd-shutdown or equivalent)
  4. Master device unbind triggers NETDEV_GOING_DOWN notifier
  5. DSA slave handler dereferences unregistered interfaces causing paging fault and panic

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for Oops or paging request faults referencing dsa_slave_netdevice_event during shutdown sequences; examine stack traces showing dev_close_many and unregister_netdevice calls after dsa_switch_shutdown.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates containing the referenced fix on all DSA-using systems
  • Monitor for kernel oops or panic logs during scheduled maintenance reboots
  • Apply the fix during next planned maintenance window given the local-only trigger and low EPSS

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: dsa: fix panic when DSA master device unbinds on shutdown Rafael reports that on a system with LX2160A and Marvell DSA switches, if a reboot occurs while the DSA master (dpaa2-eth) is up, the following panic can be seen: systemd-shutdown[1]: Rebooting. But dsa_switch_shutdown() has already run, and this has unregistered the DSA slave interfaces, and yet, the NETDEV_GOING_DOWN handler attempts to call dev_close_many() on those slave interfaces, leading to the problem. The previous attempt to avoid the NETDEV_GOING_DOWN on the master after dsa_switch_shutdown() was called seems improper. Unregistering the slave interfaces is unnecessary and unhelpful. Instead, after the slaves have stopped being uppers of the DSA master, we can now reset to NULL the master->dsa_ptr pointer, which will make DSA start ignoring all future notifier events on the master.
