What it actually does
Incorrect loop condition in sba_unmap_sg tests sg_dma_len before decrementing nents, allowing sglist overrun that crosses page boundaries and triggers data TLB miss / null pointer dereference during DMA unmap on PA-RISC.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel panic during normal DMA operations on affected PA-RISC hardware can cause unplanned system restarts, interrupting workloads and requiring manual intervention or reboot.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local code execution triggers DMA scatter-gather unmap operations (for example via SCSI or network drivers) that exercise the faulty while-loop condition; when the list crosses a page boundary the kernel dereferences an invalid address and panics.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit f23f0444ead4d941165aa82ce2fcbb997dc00e97 or later; rebuild and reboot all affected PA-RISC systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit f23f0444ead4d941165aa82ce2fcbb997dc00e97; exercise DMA unmap paths under load and verify absence of the Bad Address panic signature.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local execution on PA-RISC Linux system
- Issue I/O operations that populate and then unmap a multi-page scatter-gather list
- Trigger the sba_unmap_sg path with nents ordering that overruns the list
- Kernel performs invalid memory reference and panics
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for "sba_unmap_sg" backtraces, "Bad Address (null pointer deref?)" messages, and IAOQ addresses inside sba_unmap_sg; correlate with SCSI or DMA-related processes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on all PA-RISC systems within change windows
- Add the fixed commit ID to patch-management tracking
- Monitor kernel logs for "Data TLB miss" or "sba_unmap_sg" panics until patched

The bug is caused by overrunning the sglist and incorrectly testing sg_dma_len(sglist) before nents. Normally this doesn't cause a crash, but in this case sglist crossed a page boundary. This occurs in the following code: while (sg_dma_len(sglist) && nents--) { The fix is simply to test nents first and move the decrement of nents into the loop.
