Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A bug in the Linux kernel's handling of virtual machines can cause crashes or memory leaks when certain internal processor states are changed, so administrators should install the latest kernel update.

What it actually does

Improper state management in KVM x86 nested virtualization allows SMM toggling via KVM_SET_VCPU_EVENTS to leave nVMX structures in an inconsistent state, resulting in failure to free shadow VMCS objects, memory leaks, and architecturally invalid vCPU states.

Why it matters to the business

Virtual machine hosts running affected kernels may experience instability, memory exhaustion, or crashes during state restore operations; updating kernels across fleets introduces operational overhead and potential downtime for virtualization workloads.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access to the KVM subsystem issues KVM_SET_VCPU_EVENTS or KVM_SYNC_X86_EVENTS ioctls to force SMM state changes while the vCPU is post-VMXON or in L2, triggering vmx_enter_smm() to corrupt nested state and produce a WARN plus leaked VMCS memory; the same sequence can place the vCPU into an impossible architectural state.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 080dbe7e9b86a0392d8dffc00d9971792afc121f or later; rebuild and deploy the fixed kernel across all affected hosts before restoring any nested virtualization workloads.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains commit 080dbe7e9b86a0392d8dffc00d9971792afc121f via 'git log' or package version; attempt KVM_SET_VCPU_EVENTS state transitions in a test VM and verify absence of free_loaded_vmcs warnings.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local access to a system running the vulnerable KVM module
  2. Open a KVM virtual machine file descriptor and create a vCPU
  3. Place the vCPU into nested virtualization (post-VMXON) or L2 execution
  4. Issue KVM_SET_VCPU_EVENTS to toggle SMM state while nested
  5. Observe resulting WARN in dmesg and memory leak of shadow VMCS structures

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for the string 'free_loaded_vmcs' and the associated WARNING stack trace; inspect processes performing frequent KVM ioctls for unexpected SMM state changes.

  • WARNING: CPU.*free_loaded_vmcs
  • free_loaded_vmcs+0x158/0x1a0
  • kvm_arch_vcpu_destroy
  • kvm_destroy_vcpus

What your security team should do

  • Apply the fixed kernel commit immediately on all KVM hosts
  • Audit any automation or snapshot/restore tooling that calls KVM_SET_VCPU_EVENTS or KVM_SYNC_X86_EVENTS
  • Disable nested virtualization where not required until patches are deployed
  • Monitor kernel logs for free_loaded_vmcs warnings on remaining unpatched systems

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: x86: Forcibly leave nested virt when SMM state is toggled Forcibly leave nested virtualization operation if userspace toggles SMM state via KVM_SET_VCPU_EVENTS or KVM_SYNC_X86_EVENTS. If userspace forces the vCPU out of SMM while it's post-VMXON and then injects an SMI, vmx_enter_smm() will overwrite vmx->nested.smm.vmxon and end up with both vmxon=false and smm.vmxon=false, but all other nVMX state allocated. Don't attempt to gracefully handle the transition as (a) most transitions are nonsencial, e.g. forcing SMM while L2 is running, (b) there isn't sufficient information to handle all transitions, e.g. SVM wants access to the SMRAM save state, and (c) KVM_SET_VCPU_EVENTS must precede KVM_SET_NESTED_STATE during state restore as the latter disallows putting the vCPU into L2 if SMM is active, and disallows tagging the vCPU as being post-VMXON in SMM if SMM is not active. Abuse of KVM_SET_VCPU_EVENTS manifests as a WARN and memory leak in nVMX due to failure to free vmcs01's shadow VMCS, but the bug goes far beyond just a memory leak, e.g. toggling SMM on while L2 is active puts the vCPU in an architecturally impossible state.
