What it actually does
Kernel crash in xhci_disable_hub_port_wake during system suspend when runtime suspend has already gated clocks, causing register access without prior runtime resume.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected system crashes or instability on suspend/resume cycles for affected Linux platforms, resulting in operational downtime and potential data loss for users relying on power management.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers runtime suspend followed by system suspend (e.g., via power state changes) on vulnerable kernels, causing the xHCI driver to access gated registers and crash the system; no remote or unauthenticated paths exist.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 20c51a4c52208f98e27308c456a1951778f41fa5 or later; apply the runtime resume before suspend fix in xhci-plat.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel version includes the referenced commit; test suspend/resume cycles with remote wakeup enabled on xHCI platforms; confirm no crash in dmesg during xhci_suspend.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access to trigger runtime suspend on USB xHCI platform device
- Initiate system suspend (e.g., echo mem > /sys/power/state)
- xhci_suspend calls xhci_disable_hub_port_wake without ensuring clocks are active
- Synchronous external abort occurs due to register access on gated clock domain
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for synchronous external abort during xhci_suspend or xhci_disable_hub_port_wake; check for workqueue crashes involving async_run_entry_fn on suspend.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on affected distributions within standard maintenance windows
- Monitor for power management related oops in logs on i.MX and similar platforms
- Disable remote wakeup temporarily if immediate patching is not feasible

This problem was hidden by power domain driver, which call run time resume before it. But the below commit remove it and make this issue happen. commit c1df456d0f06e ("PM: domains: Don't runtime resume devices at genpd_prepare()") This patch call run time resume before suspend to make sure clock is on before access register.
