What it actually does
Incorrect shift operand in hfi1_ipoib_drain_tx_ring uses ring size instead of txq item size, causing out-of-bounds or invalid memory write during tx ring drain when ipoib send_queue_size exceeds the default.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel panic and system crash on Linux hosts using the hfi1 InfiniBand driver whenever a larger IPoIB send queue is configured, resulting in unplanned downtime for storage or HPC workloads.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or misconfigured workload increases the ipoib send_queue_size parameter; later when the interface is stopped or the link is reconfigured, the drain routine performs an erroneous write that triggers a kernel panic.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to version 5.16.8 or later, or apply commit 1530d84fba1e459ba55f46aa42649b88773210e7 in the hfi1 driver; rebuild and reboot with the fixed kernel.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version is at least 5.16.8; attempt to set a larger ipoib send_queue_size and stop the interface without observing a panic in hfi1_ipoib_drain_tx_ring.
Typical attack path
- Identify Linux system using hfi1 InfiniBand hardware
- Increase ipoib send_queue_size above default via sysfs or ipoib configuration
- Trigger interface stop or link change (ifconfig down, rtnl_newlink, etc.)
- Kernel executes hfi1_ipoib_drain_tx_ring with wrong offset calculation
- Invalid memory store causes panic and reboot
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for the symbol hfi1_ipoib_drain_tx_ring or the call trace containing hfi1_ipoib_napi_tx_disable and ipoib_stop; correlate with recent changes to ipoib send_queue_size.
- hfi1_ipoib_drain_tx_ring+0x45/0xf0
- RIP: 0010:hfi1_ipoib_drain_tx_ring
- Call Trace: hfi1_ipoib_napi_tx_disable+0x45/0x60
- CR2: ffffc9000aa0f118
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on all systems exposing the hfi1 driver
- Audit IPoIB interface configurations for non-default send_queue_size values
- Add kernel version checks to deployment pipelines
- Monitor for hfi1-related panics until patching is complete

Fix by using the item size.
