What it actually does
The vulnerability is a data race between LRU list operations and TCP fragment building where page_is_pfmemalloc() can observe stale or incorrect pfmemalloc status on user-provided pages, leading to corrupted skb page descriptors.
Why it matters to the business
Affected Linux systems may experience kernel instability or crashes during high-volume network file transfers using sendfile or splice, causing service outages and requiring reboots; the issue has been public for over two years with negligible exploit activity.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker triggers concurrent file writes and TCP send operations that race between folio LRU insertion and skb descriptor population, allowing the attacker to observe or influence low-order bits in page structures and potentially escalate privileges or cause denial of service.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a Linux kernel containing commit 8527c9a6bf8e54fef0a8d3d7d8874a48c725c915; backport prerequisite commit 84ce071e38a6 when maintaining stable branches.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel includes the referenced fix commit; re-run KCSAN on the tcp and mm paths and verify absence of the reported race; test sendfile/splice workloads under concurrency.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local unprivileged access on a vulnerable Linux kernel
- Open a TCP socket and a file descriptor
- Issue concurrent splice or sendfile syscalls while other threads perform page-cache activity
- Trigger the data race in tcp_build_frag and lru_add_fn
- Leverage resulting memory inconsistency for further exploitation
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KCSAN reports for data-race entries involving lru_add_fn and tcp_build_frag; investigate any unexplained kernel panics or oops during splice or sendfile activity.
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel update to all production systems within standard change windows
- Include the fix in any custom or LTS kernel builds
- Monitor upstream stable trees for additional backports
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tcp: TX zerocopy should not sense pfmemalloc status We got a recent syzbot report [1] showing a possible misuse of pfmemalloc page status in TCP zerocopy paths. Indeed, for pages coming from user space or other layers, using page_is_pfmemalloc() is moot, and possibly could give false positives. There has been attempts to make page_is_pfmemalloc() more robust, but not using it in the first place in this context is probably better, removing cpu cycles. Note to stable teams : You need to backport 84ce071e38a6 ("net: introduce __skb_fill_page_desc_noacc") as a prereq. Race is more probable after commit c07aea3ef4d4 ("mm: add a signature in struct page") because page_is_pfmemalloc() is now using low order bit from page->lru.next, which can change more often than page->index. Low order bit should never be set for lru.next (when used as an anchor in LRU list), so KCSAN report is mostly a false positive. Backporting to older kernel versions seems not necessary.
