What it actually does

Incorrect freeing of client instance in i40e driver sets pf->cinst to NULL; subsequent i40e_lan_del_device call during module unload dereferences the NULL pointer causing kernel oops.

Why it matters to the business

Local users or automated scripts can trigger system crashes when performing repeated ethtool offline tests followed by dependent module removal, leading to unplanned downtime on affected Linux systems with i40e hardware.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access runs ethtool offline tests twice to induce IRDMA failure, then unloads irdma (which pulls i40e), causing i40e_remove to call i40e_lan_del_device on a NULL client pointer and crash the kernel.

How to fix it

Apply kernel patches containing commit c49f320e2492738d478bc427dcd54ccfe0cba746 (or later stable equivalents) and rebuild. Do not free the client instance on open-callback failure; only clear the OPENED bit and guard close callbacks accordingly.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm presence of the fix commit in the running kernel tree; re-execute the published reproducer (double offline test + irdma unload) and verify absence of NULL dereference oops in dmesg.

Typical attack path

  1. Run ethtool -t <iface> offline twice in quick succession
  2. Unload dependent RDMA module (e.g., modprobe -r irdma)
  3. Trigger i40e module removal path that dereferences freed client instance

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and kdump traces for the exact oops signature involving i40e_lan_del_device, i40e_remove, and NULL pointer dereference at address 0x30; correlate with preceding ethtool offline test messages and irdma unload events.

  • i40e_lan_del_device+0x13/0xb0
  • BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000030
  • i40e_ptp_stop: removed PHC
  • i40e_client_del_instance

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrade on all systems exposing i40e interfaces
  • Restrict local ethtool and modprobe privileges until patched
  • Monitor kernel logs for i40e-related NULL pointer oops

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i40e: Fix kernel crash during module removal The driver incorrectly frees client instance and subsequent i40e module removal leads to kernel crash. Reproducer: 1. Do ethtool offline test followed immediately by another one host# ethtool -t eth0 offline; ethtool -t eth0 offline 2. During the module removal i40e_remove() calls i40e_lan_del_device() that dereferences pf->cinst that is NULL -> crash. Do not remove client instance when client open callbacks fails and just clear __I40E_CLIENT_INSTANCE_OPENED bit. The driver also needs to take care about this situation (when netdev is up and client is NOT opened) in i40e_notify_client_of_netdev_close() and calls client close callback only when __I40E_CLIENT_INSTANCE_OPENED is set.
