What it actually does

Causes a hang during btrfs unmount when an async metadata reclaim work item cannot be canceled after a cleaner kthread creates a reservation ticket that cannot be satisfied immediately, leaving the umount process blocked on __flush_work.

Why it matters to the business

Btrfs filesystems on Linux systems may hang during unmount under metadata pressure workloads, leading to forced reboots, potential data inconsistency, and operational downtime; widespread kernel prevalence increases exposure across servers and devices.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access triggers metadata space exhaustion via many small file writes (as in fstests generic/562), causing the cleaner thread to queue async_reclaim_work; during subsequent unmount the work cancellation blocks indefinitely because the reclaim task holds resources needed for completion.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 8fe28cb58bcb235034b64cbbb7550a8a43fd88be; apply the fix to all affected btrfs deployments and reboot systems after installation.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel includes commit 8fe28cb58bcb235034b64cbbb7550a8a43fd88be, then reproduce metadata pressure and unmount scenarios to verify the umount completes without hung-task traces.

Typical attack path

  1. Create conditions that exhaust btrfs metadata space with many small files
  2. Trigger the cleaner kthread to start a transaction and queue async_reclaim_work
  3. Initiate filesystem unmount while the reclaim work is pending
  4. Observe indefinite block in __cancel_work_timer during close_ctree

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for hung task timeouts referencing umount, __flush_work, close_ctree, and btrfs; correlate with periods of high metadata allocation and unmount attempts.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrade to the fixed commit across all Linux systems using btrfs
  • Add monitoring for hung-task and close_ctree messages in kernel logs
  • Test unmount behavior under load before deploying to production
  • Consider disabling btrfs or using alternative filesystems where unmount reliability is critical

We try to create an inline extent for them, but we fail when trying to insert the inline extent with -ENOSPC (at cow_file_range_inline()) - since this is not critical, we fallback to non-inline mode (back to cow_file_range()), reserve extents ---truncated---
