What it actually does
Invalid pointer dereference in ice driver when num_txq/rxq and tc_cfg are left inconsistent after ice_vsi_cfg_tc fails due to more TCs than allocated queues, leading to general protection fault during ring setup.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using Intel E810 or similar ice-based NICs with DCB/LLDP can experience unexpected kernel crashes and reboots when traffic class counts increase, causing network outages and service disruption on servers and appliances.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or misconfigured peer sends LLDP frames that trigger dcbnl_ieee_set to request more TCs than currently allocated queues; the driver attempts ice_vsi_open and ice_setup_rx_ring on stale state, dereferencing an invalid pointer and crashing the kernel.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 3d7cb6b04c3f3115719235cc6866b10326de34cd which ensures num_txq/rxq are only updated after validation and tc_cfg is restored on failure.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 3d7cb6b04c3f3115719235cc6866b10326de34cd or later; reproduce the LLDP TC increase scenario in a test environment and verify absence of the 'More TCs defined than queues' error followed by crash.
Typical attack path
- Attacker or switch sends LLDP TLVs increasing the number of traffic classes
- ice_dcbnl_setets calls ice_pf_dcb_cfg which invokes ice_dcb_ena_dis_vsi
- ice_vsi_cfg_tc detects mismatch and fails, leaving dirty num_txq/rxq and tc_cfg
- ice_vsi_open proceeds to ice_setup_rx_ring using invalid pointers
- Kernel dereferences dead pointer resulting in general protection fault and panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for 'ice' driver messages containing 'More TCs defined than queues', 'Trying to use more Rx queues', 'Failed to config TC for VSI', and the subsequent general protection fault with call trace involving ice_setup_rx_ring, ice_vsi_open, and lldpad process.
- ice 0000:*:*.*: More TCs defined than queues/rings allocated
- ice 0000:*:*.*: Trying to use more Rx queues
- Failed to config TC for VSI index
- general protection fault: 0000
- RIP: 0010:devm_kmalloc
- Call Trace:.*ice_setup_rx_ring.*ice_vsi_open.*ice_dcb_ena_dis_vsi.*lldpad
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on all systems exposing ice driver to LLDP or DCB
- Monitor for the specific ice driver oops and lldpad-triggered crashes
- Temporarily disable DCB or LLDP on affected interfaces if immediate patching is not possible
- Test the fixed kernel in a staging environment before broad deployment
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ice: Fix crash by keep old cfg when update TCs more than queues There are problems if allocated queues less than Traffic Classes. Commit a632b2a4c920 ("ice: ethtool: Prohibit improper channel config for DCB") already disallow setting less queues than TCs. Another case is if we first set less queues, and later update more TCs config due to LLDP, ice_vsi_cfg_tc() will failed but left dirty num_txq/rxq and tc_cfg in vsi, that will cause invalid pointer access.
