What it actually does
A logic issue in state management allows maliciously crafted web content to disclose sensitive user information during processing.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers may access private user data through web browsing, increasing privacy risks and potential regulatory exposure; low EPSS and no KEV status indicate limited active exploitation but still requires prompt patching across Apple ecosystems.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates specially crafted web content that abuses the state management flaw in WebKit; when a user processes the content in affected Safari or iOS/macOS versions, sensitive information is leaked to the attacker. Named threat actor context points to Apple Multiple Products Unspecified Vulnerability campaigns.
How to fix it
Update to tvOS 16.1, macOS Ventura 13, watchOS 9.1, Safari 16.1, iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16. Although input lists vim/vim (GIT) fixed in b4ddc6c11e95cef4b372e239871fae1c8d4f72b6, apply the Apple OS and browser updates matching the described products.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify devices and browsers are running the listed fixed versions; test with known malicious web content samples in a lab environment to confirm no information disclosure occurs.
Typical attack path
- Craft malicious web content exploiting state management
- Host or deliver content via phishing or compromised site
- Victim processes the content in vulnerable Safari/iOS/macOS
- Sensitive user information is disclosed to attacker
How to detect it
Review web browser logs, network traffic for unexpected data exfiltration, and system audit logs on macOS/iOS devices for signs of information leakage tied to web content processing; check for threat actor patterns associated with Apple product vulnerabilities.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all affected Apple devices and Safari instances due to information disclosure risk
- Monitor EPSS trend (stable at ~0.0035) and threat actor mentions for any increase in activity
- Review web content handling policies and implement least-privilege browsing where possible
The record
A logic issue was addressed with improved state management. This issue is fixed in tvOS 16.1, macOS Ventura 13, watchOS 9.1, Safari 16.1, iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16. Processing maliciously crafted web content may disclose sensitive user information.
