Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A configuration mistake in NVIDIA graphics software used inside virtual machines lets ordinary users inside those machines reach system components they should not, which could let them run unauthorized programs or disrupt service.

What it actually does

Misconfigured D-Bus configuration file in the NVIDIA vGPU Display Driver permits an unauthorized local user inside a Linux guest VM to reach protected D-Bus endpoints, enabling arbitrary code execution, privilege escalation, denial of service, information disclosure, or data tampering within the guest.

Why it matters to the business

Virtualized GPU deployments across cloud gaming, enterprise VDI, and high-performance computing environments face risk of guest-to-guest or guest-to-host security boundary violations, potentially resulting in data loss, service disruption, or compliance violations in multi-tenant infrastructures.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker obtains a low-privileged shell inside an affected Linux guest VM, locates the vulnerable D-Bus configuration, and sends crafted messages to protected endpoints that the driver exposes, ultimately achieving code execution or elevated privileges inside the guest.

How to fix it

Upgrade the NVIDIA vGPU Display Driver and related GPU software components on all affected Linux guest operating systems to the latest vendor-supplied releases that correct the D-Bus configuration; apply corresponding hypervisor and host driver updates where available.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm that the installed NVIDIA driver package version contains the corrected D-Bus configuration file, verify file permissions and policy rules on /etc/dbus-1/system.d/ entries related to NVIDIA services, and test that non-privileged users can no longer reach protected endpoints.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell access as a non-root user inside an NVIDIA vGPU-enabled Linux guest VM
  2. Identify and connect to the exposed D-Bus endpoints via the misconfigured policy
  3. Craft and send D-Bus method calls or signals that bypass intended authorization
  4. Execute arbitrary code, escalate privileges, or perform denial-of-service actions

How to detect it

Review system and D-Bus daemon logs (syslog, journalctl) inside guest VMs for unexpected connections or method invocations to NVIDIA-related D-Bus services by non-root users; correlate with process creation events showing unusual dbus-send or gdbus activity.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching of all NVIDIA vGPU Linux guests given the 1387-day window since disclosure
  • Harden D-Bus policies inside guest VMs to enforce least-privilege endpoint access
  • Implement guest VM image baselines that include only approved NVIDIA driver versions
  • Monitor virtualization management consoles for guest driver version drift

The record

NVIDIA vGPU Display Driver for Linux guest contains a vulnerability in a D-Bus configuration file, where an unauthorized user in the guest VM can impact protected D-Bus endpoints, which may lead to code execution, denial of service, escalation of privileges, information disclosure, or data tampering.
