What it actually does
Integer overflow in the nvidia.ko kernel-mode driver component allowing local attackers to trigger memory corruption that results in information disclosure, data tampering, or denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using NVIDIA GPUs on Linux may experience data leaks, unauthorized modification of graphics or system memory, or sudden crashes that disrupt workloads in virtualized, cloud, or workstation environments; the long period since disclosure increases the chance of unpatched instances persisting across large fleets.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local user privileges on an affected Linux system interacts with the nvidia.ko module through normal GPU APIs or direct device access, supplying crafted parameters that trigger the integer overflow and corrupt kernel memory to achieve disclosure, tampering, or a crash.
How to fix it
Upgrade the NVIDIA GPU Display Driver (nvidia.ko) on all affected Linux distributions and hypervisors to the vendor-supplied version that resolves the integer overflow; where driver updates are unavailable or delayed, isolate GPU-accelerated workloads and restrict unprivileged local access.
How to confirm the fix worked
Compare the loaded nvidia.ko module version and build date against the current NVIDIA driver release notes; verify that kernel symbols or dmesg output no longer expose the vulnerable code paths after the update.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell or user context on a Linux host with the vulnerable NVIDIA driver loaded
- Open or mmap the /dev/nvidia* device nodes or invoke GPU-related syscalls
- Supply integer values that overflow during size or offset calculations inside nvidia.ko
- Leverage the resulting memory corruption to read or write arbitrary kernel memory or induce a panic
How to detect it
Review kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log) for nvidia.ko-related oops, warnings, or integer overflow messages; correlate unusual process activity that opens NVIDIA device nodes with subsequent crashes or anomalous memory usage.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all Linux hosts running NVIDIA drivers and schedule driver updates
- Apply vendor patches before the next maintenance window on internet-facing or multi-tenant systems
- Reduce local attack surface by enforcing least-privilege access to GPU devices
- Monitor NVIDIA security bulletins for subsequent fixes or backports
The record
NVIDIA GPU Display Driver for Linux contains a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer (nvidia.ko), where an integer overflow may lead to information disclosure, data tampering or denial of service.
