Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A hard-to-exploit flaw in older versions of VirtualBox could let a remote attacker take over virtual machines if they can reach the remote display feature, so organizations should update the software promptly.

What it actually does

Unauthenticated network attacker can exploit a difficult-to-reach flaw in the VirtualBox Core component over VRDP to achieve full takeover of the VirtualBox process and guest VM.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation can lead to complete compromise of virtual machines, resulting in loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of workloads hosted in affected VirtualBox installations; the issue has been public for years with slowly rising exploit probability but no known mass exploitation campaigns.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with network reachability to a VRDP-enabled VirtualBox instance sends crafted VRDP protocol messages that trigger the vulnerability; because the flaw requires high attack complexity, the attacker must carefully prepare the session to bypass protections and obtain code execution, ultimately seizing control of the VirtualBox process and any running guests.

How to fix it

Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 6.1.40 or later. Disable VRDP exposure to untrusted networks until patches are applied. Monitor Oracle's advisory for any backported fixes in older branches.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the installed VirtualBox version is 6.1.40 or newer; confirm VRDP is either disabled or restricted to trusted networks via configuration files and running processes; retest connectivity after changes.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify VirtualBox hosts exposing VRDP on TCP ports
  2. Establish a VRDP session and probe for the vulnerable code path
  3. Transmit specially crafted VRDP packets that trigger memory corruption
  4. Achieve remote code execution inside the VirtualBox process
  5. Escalate to full takeover of the hypervisor and guest VMs

How to detect it

Review VRDP listener logs, network flows to VirtualBox processes, and any unexpected child processes or privilege escalations originating from vboxheadless or VirtualBox binaries; correlate with authentication attempts from untrusted sources.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory all VirtualBox deployments and confirm VRDP exposure
  • Apply the 6.1.40 update or disable VRDP on internet-facing instances
  • Add VirtualBox version checks to asset management and vulnerability scanning
  • Review network segmentation for any VRDP listeners

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 6.1.40. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via VRDP to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Oracle VM VirtualBox. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 8.1 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).
