What it actually does

Unauthenticated network attacker with VRDP access can exploit a difficult-to-exploit flaw in the Core component to achieve full takeover of the VirtualBox process.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation grants complete control over affected virtualization hosts, enabling theft of VM data, lateral movement, and operational disruption across dependent workloads. No ransomware or KEV association reduces immediate urgency, though EPSS trend shows modest increase.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with network reachability to an exposed VRDP port sends crafted traffic that triggers the core vulnerability, bypassing authentication and executing arbitrary code to seize control of the VirtualBox instance.

How to fix it

Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 6.1.40 or later. Where gitlab-org/gitlab is present, apply the fix at commit e8824bdbcb70ab6210d3de565d52662d95c96978.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed VirtualBox version is at least 6.1.40; confirm VRDP listener is disabled or firewalled if upgrade is delayed; retest connectivity after patching.

Typical attack path

  1. Scan for publicly reachable VRDP endpoints on affected VirtualBox versions prior to 6.1.40
  2. Establish a VRDP connection without credentials
  3. Deliver malicious payload exploiting the core component flaw
  4. Achieve remote code execution and full process takeover

How to detect it

Review network logs for unusual VRDP connection attempts from untrusted sources; inspect process creation events around VirtualBox binaries for anomalous child processes or privilege escalations.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of all VirtualBox instances to 6.1.40 within standard change windows
  • Disable VRDP or restrict it to trusted networks via firewall rules
  • Monitor EPSS trend and reassess if exploit maturity improves
  • Audit exposed virtualization hosts for unexpected VRDP listeners

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 6.1.40. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via VRDP to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Oracle VM VirtualBox. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 8.1 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).
