What it actually does

The flaw permits remote attackers to inject arbitrary operating system commands through unsanitized input that is passed directly to a shell or command execution API, resulting in full remote code execution with the privileges of the vulnerable process.

Why it matters to the business

Compromised systems can be fully controlled by attackers, enabling theft of credentials and data, deployment of ransomware or backdoors, and disruption of services that rely on the affected software.

How an attack unfolds

An unauthenticated remote attacker identifies an exposed instance, crafts input containing shell metacharacters and malicious commands, submits the payload through a network-accessible interface, and the unsanitized input is executed, granting interactive command access.

How to fix it

Upgrade ohmyzsh/ohmyzsh to commit 6cb41b70a6d04301fd50cd5862ecd705ba226c0e or later; if immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict network exposure and implement input sanitization or command execution wrappers that reject dangerous characters.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed commit hash or version matches or exceeds 6cb41b70a6d04301fd50cd5862ecd705ba226c0e; test previously vulnerable input vectors to verify that injected commands are no longer executed.

Typical attack path

  1. Scan for publicly reachable instances of the vulnerable software
  2. Identify endpoints or parameters that accept user-controlled input destined for command execution
  3. Craft and transmit a payload containing command separators and arbitrary OS commands
  4. Receive command output or confirm execution via side channels
  5. Establish persistence, escalate privileges, or move laterally within the environment

How to detect it

Examine process creation logs, shell history files, and application logs for unexpected command invocations containing shell metacharacters or unusual binaries; correlate with inbound network requests containing suspicious payloads.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately schedule upgrade to the fixed commit for all instances
  • Temporarily block or proxy inbound traffic to affected endpoints until patched
  • Review logs for prior command execution attempts using known injection patterns
  • Add runtime application self-protection or WAF rules that block shell metacharacters in relevant inputs
