What it actually does

Cross-site scripting flaw in uBlock Origin before 1.41.1 permits remote attackers to inject and execute arbitrary JavaScript in the browser renderer process by supplying a spoofed MessageSender.url value that bypasses origin checks.

Why it matters to the business

Users of the affected browser extension may have malicious scripts run in their browsing session, enabling potential theft of session data, credential capture, or unauthorized actions within web applications without user interaction beyond visiting a crafted page.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts or compromises a page that interacts with the uBlock Origin extension messaging API, crafts a message containing a spoofed MessageSender.url pointing to attacker-controlled content, and delivers it to the extension's message handler; the renderer process then executes the payload as trusted code.

How to fix it

Upgrade uBlock Origin to version 1.41.1 or newer on all affected browsers; verify the update through the browser's extension management interface.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed extension version is at least 1.41.1 via browser settings; test by attempting to send a message with a spoofed MessageSender.url and verify that execution is blocked.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate users running uBlock Origin versions prior to 1.41.1
  2. Serve a web page or resource that triggers the extension's message listener
  3. Supply a spoofed MessageSender.url containing a JavaScript payload
  4. Trigger execution within the browser renderer context to perform malicious actions

How to detect it

Review browser console logs and extension debug output for unexpected message handling or renderer errors tied to MessageSender objects; correlate with web requests containing unusual url parameters.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately deploy the 1.41.1 update across the organization
  • Audit browser extension inventories for outdated uBlock Origin instances
  • Educate users on verifying extension updates from official stores

The record

Cross Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in uBlock Origin extension before 1.41.1 allows remote attackers to run arbitrary code via a spoofed 'MessageSender.url' to the browser renderer process.
