What it actually does
Out-of-bounds write in WebGL rendering path allowing memory corruption and potential arbitrary code execution within the browser process.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can remotely compromise user systems through a crafted web page, leading to data theft, credential access, or full device takeover across large user bases reliant on affected browsers.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a specially crafted webpage that triggers the WebGL out-of-bounds write when loaded in an unpatched browser; the corruption is used to achieve code execution without user interaction beyond visiting the page.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 101 or later, Firefox ESR to 91.10 or later, and Thunderbird to 91.10 or later. Apply updates across all managed endpoints and verify version compliance via inventory tools.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm browser versions meet or exceed the fixed releases listed in the advisory; test WebGL functionality on sample pages to ensure no crashes occur under expected rendering loads.
Typical attack path
- Attacker prepares and hosts a malicious webpage exploiting the WebGL flaw
- Victim is lured to the page via phishing, ads, or compromised sites
- Browser processes the page and triggers the out-of-bounds write
- Memory corruption is leveraged for code execution or crash
- Attacker payload establishes persistence or exfiltrates data
How to detect it
Review browser crash reports and logs for WebGL-related faults; correlate with web proxy or firewall logs showing visits to suspicious domains around the time of any anomalous process behavior.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize immediate patching of all Firefox, ESR, and Thunderbird instances due to high CVSS and remote attack vector
- Enable automatic updates where feasible and enforce via enterprise policy
- Monitor for browser crashes correlated with WebGL activity as a temporary detection measure
- Review and restrict unnecessary WebGL usage in internal web applications
The record
A malicious webpage could have caused an out-of-bounds write in WebGL, leading to memory corruption and a potentially exploitable crash. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 91.10, Firefox < 101, and Firefox ESR < 91.10.
