What it actually does
Local non-administrative access in the guest OS allows escalation to root privileges inside the virtual machine via a flaw in VMware Tools.
Why it matters to the business
Compromised virtual machines can lead to data theft, lateral movement, or complete takeover of workloads, increasing operational risk especially in environments with many virtualized systems.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first gains local non-administrative access to the guest operating system, then abuses the VMware Tools vulnerability to elevate privileges to root within the virtual machine; no widespread exploitation or named threat actors are associated with this issue.
How to fix it
Upgrade VMware Tools to a patched release; apply vendor updates promptly given the 1506 days since publication and stable but non-zero EPSS score.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify VMware Tools version against fixed releases and confirm the vulnerability is no longer present through local privilege checks or vendor-provided validation scripts.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local non-administrative access to the guest OS
- Trigger the local privilege escalation in VMware Tools
- Execute code or commands as root inside the virtual machine
How to detect it
Review guest OS logs and process execution records for unexpected root-level activity originating from non-privileged users; no specific threat actor indicators are available.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching VMware Tools across all virtual machines
- Audit guest OS access controls to limit local non-administrative accounts
- Monitor for unusual privilege changes within guest environments
The record
VMware Tools (12.0.0, 11.x.y and 10.x.y) contains a local privilege escalation vulnerability. A malicious actor with local non-administrative access to the Guest OS can escalate privileges as a root user in the virtual machine.
