What it actually does

The vulnerability permits a local user to trigger an out-of-bounds read inside the kernel-mode driver nvlddmkm.sys, which can be abused for code execution, denial of service, privilege escalation, information disclosure, or data tampering.

Why it matters to the business

Systems with NVIDIA GPUs may be fully compromised by an attacker who already has local access, resulting in loss of control, data exposure, or service disruption.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local low-privileged access supplies crafted input to the vulnerable kernel driver component, causing an out-of-bounds read that is then leveraged to achieve code execution or higher privileges on the Windows host.

How to fix it

Upgrade the NVIDIA GPU Display Driver to a version that resolves the out-of-bounds read; apply the vendor patch as soon as it is available for the installed driver branch.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed NVIDIA driver version matches or exceeds the fixed release listed by the vendor and verify that the nvlddmkm.sys file no longer exhibits the vulnerable code path.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local access to a Windows system with the vulnerable NVIDIA driver
  2. Identify the nvlddmkm.sys kernel component
  3. Craft input that triggers the out-of-bounds read condition
  4. Leverage the resulting memory corruption for code execution or privilege escalation

How to detect it

Review Windows system and application event logs for repeated nvlddmkm.sys faults, unexpected kernel-mode crashes, or privilege-escalation events around the time of suspected activity.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the NVIDIA driver update to all affected Windows endpoints immediately
  • Limit local user accounts to the minimum required privileges
  • Monitor driver-related crashes and kernel events for signs of exploitation attempts

The record

NVIDIA GPU Display Driver for Windows contains a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer (nvlddmkm.sys), where a local user with basic capabilities can cause an out-of-bounds read, which may lead to code execution, denial of service, escalation of privileges, information disclosure, or data tampering.
