A flaw in NVIDIA's virtual graphics software lets one virtual machine grab resources it shouldn't have, which could let attackers steal or damage data belonging to other users sharing the same graphics hardware.

What it actually does

The Virtual GPU Manager allows a guest VM to request and allocate GPU resources beyond its authorized quota via an authorization bypass in the vGPU plugin.

Why it matters to the business

Virtualized GPU workloads can suffer data leaks between tenants, service outages, or corrupted results, increasing risk in multi-tenant GPU environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker who has code execution inside a guest VM sends crafted resource allocation requests through the vGPU plugin that the manager fails to validate, resulting in unauthorized access to memory or compute slices belonging to other VMs or the hypervisor.

How to fix it

Upgrade NVIDIA vGPU software to a version that enforces proper authorization checks on resource allocation requests; until patches are available, isolate sensitive workloads on dedicated physical GPUs and restrict guest VM privileges.

How to confirm the fix worked

Compare installed vGPU Manager and guest driver versions against NVIDIA security bulletins; attempt resource allocation tests from a guest VM using vendor-provided validation tools to confirm enforcement.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain code execution inside a guest VM that uses NVIDIA vGPU
  2. Trigger unauthorized resource allocation calls via the vGPU driver interface
  3. Escalate to read/write other tenants' data, cause denial of service, or disclose hypervisor memory
  4. Exfiltrate data or maintain persistence through continued resource abuse

How to detect it

Review vGPU Manager logs and hypervisor audit records for guest-initiated allocation requests that exceed declared quotas or reference unauthorized memory regions; correlate with guest VM process activity.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching NVIDIA vGPU components on all affected hypervisors
  • Monitor guest VM resource requests for anomalies exceeding assigned quotas
  • Apply least-privilege GPU scheduling policies and consider physical GPU isolation for high-value workloads
  • Review hypervisor logs for unexpected allocation patterns after any guest compromise

The record

NVIDIA vGPU software contains a vulnerability in the Virtual GPU Manager (vGPU plugin), where it allows the guest VM to allocate resources for which the guest is not authorized. This vulnerability may lead to loss of data integrity and confidentiality, denial of service, or information disclosure.
