What it actually does

Sending an HTML email containing a remote iframe causes Thunderbird to issue an outbound HTTP request to the attacker-controlled URL without rendering or displaying the iframe content, resulting in an information disclosure via the request itself.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can silently confirm email delivery and recipient activity, enabling targeted follow-on attacks or privacy violations without user awareness; the long period since disclosure increases the chance of unpatched instances remaining in large deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts an HTML email embedding a remote iframe src attribute pointing to a server they control, sends the message to the victim, and monitors incoming requests to learn that the message was opened and the recipient's network location.

How to fix it

Upgrade Mozilla Thunderbird to version 102.2.1 or 91.13.1 (or later releases) on all affected systems; verify the update via the application's built-in about dialog or package manager.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm client version is at or above 102.2.1 or 91.13.1; test by sending an HTML message with a remote iframe to a monitored account and verifying no outbound request occurs.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malicious HTML email containing remote iframe element
  2. Deliver email via SMTP or other channels to target mailbox
  3. Victim opens message in vulnerable Thunderbird client
  4. Client issues HTTP request to attacker server
  5. Attacker logs request headers and IP to confirm activity

How to detect it

Inspect mail client logs or network proxy logs for unexpected outbound requests triggered by incoming HTML messages; correlate with email headers or message IDs received around the same time.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching all Thunderbird instances to the fixed releases within the next maintenance window
  • Enable automatic updates where organizational policy permits
  • Review email security gateways for HTML filtering options as a compensating control
  • Monitor EPSS trend for any future increase in exploit likelihood

The record

When receiving an HTML email that specified to load an <code>iframe</code> element from a remote location, a request to the remote document was sent. However, Thunderbird didn't display the document. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 102.2.1 and Thunderbird < 91.13.1.
