What it actually does
Use-after-free condition in Vim triggered during input processing allows memory corruption that can lead to arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the Vim process.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers with access to a crafted file could gain code execution on developer or administrator systems that use Vim, potentially leading to further compromise of source code, credentials, or connected infrastructure; the issue has been public for over four years with public exploits available.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker prepares a specially crafted file that triggers the use-after-free when opened in an affected Vim binary; once the memory corruption occurs the attacker can redirect execution to attacker-controlled code, achieving local code execution without needing elevated privileges beyond opening the file.
How to fix it
Upgrade all Vim installations to a build containing commit 1889f499a4f248cd84e0e0bf6d0d820016774494 (corresponding to Vim 9.0.0221 or newer); rebuild from source or obtain updated packages from distribution maintainers.
How to confirm the fix worked
Run 'vim --version' and confirm the version string shows 9.0.0221 or later; test that previously crashing crafted files no longer trigger memory errors under address sanitizers or similar instrumentation.
Typical attack path
- Create or obtain a malicious file designed to trigger the use-after-free
- Deliver the file to a target via email, repository, or shared storage
- Convince the victim to open the file using a vulnerable Vim binary
- Exploit the resulting memory corruption to execute arbitrary code
How to detect it
Search process execution logs and EDR telemetry for Vim crashes or unexpected memory allocations when opening files; review shell history and file-access logs for suspicious files opened shortly before anomalous Vim behavior.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all Vim instances to the fixed commit within the next sprint
- Scan internal repositories and build systems for pinned vulnerable Vim versions and update them
- Add Vim version checks to endpoint compliance scanning and CI pipelines
- Review and restrict use of untrusted files in Vim on high-value developer and server hosts
The record
Use After Free in GitHub repository vim/vim prior to 9.0.0221.
