What it actually does

Improper validation of a quantity value in user-supplied input allows memory corruption or out-of-bounds access when Vim parses the crafted data, resulting in arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the Vim process.

Why it matters to the business

Local compromise of developer or administrator workstations running Vim, potential theft of source code or credentials, and supply-chain risk when untrusted files are opened; urgency is low given stable low EPSS and no KEV listing despite public exploit code.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious file or input that triggers the quantity validation flaw in Vim versions prior to the 9.0.0218 fix commit e98c88c44c308edaea5994b8ad4363e65030968c. The victim opens the file locally with Vim, causing the editor to execute attacker-controlled code without further authentication.

How to fix it

Upgrade vim/vim to commit e98c88c44c308edaea5994b8ad4363e65030968c or later (equivalent to Vim 9.0.0218+). Rebuild from source or obtain updated packages from distribution maintainers; avoid opening untrusted files until patched.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed Vim binary reports version 9.0.0218 or newer, or verify the source tree contains commit e98c88c44c308edaea5994b8ad4363e65030968c. Test by attempting to open known-malformed inputs in a controlled environment and observing for crashes or unexpected behavior.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker prepares a specially crafted file exploiting the input quantity flaw
  2. Victim receives the file via email, download, or shared storage
  3. Victim opens the file using an affected Vim binary
  4. Vim processes the malformed quantity value leading to memory corruption
  5. Attacker payload executes with the user's privileges

How to detect it

Review process creation logs and file-access telemetry for Vim invocations on recently received or unusual files; look for unexpected child processes or memory dumps following Vim execution. No widespread campaign indicators are associated with this CVE.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching developer workstations and CI systems that invoke Vim on untrusted input
  • Add Vim version checks to software bill-of-materials and dependency scanners
  • Educate users on risks of opening files from unknown sources with Vim
  • Monitor EPSS and exploit availability trends for any future increase in risk

The record

Improper Validation of Specified Quantity in Input in GitHub repository vim/vim prior to 9.0.0218.
