What it actually does
Overly permissive validation of chroot and session names allows crafted inputs to trigger a denial of service condition against the schroot daemon, preventing session creation for all users.
Why it matters to the business
Users and automated processes lose the ability to launch isolated chroot sessions, causing operational disruption for any workflows that depend on schroot-managed environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a specially formed chroot or session name through the normal schroot client interface; the permissive name rules allow the request to reach the service, which then enters a failure state that blocks subsequent legitimate sessions.
How to fix it
Upgrade schroot to version 1.6.13 or later; restart the schroot service after installation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed schroot package reports version 1.6.13 or newer; attempt a normal session start to verify service responsiveness.
Typical attack path
- Locate a system running a vulnerable schroot version
- Issue a schroot command containing a crafted session or chroot name
- Observe the resulting denial-of-service state that prevents other users from starting sessions
How to detect it
Inspect schroot service logs and syslog for repeated session-creation failures or unusual name patterns around the time of reported outages.
What your security team should do
- Apply the 1.6.13 update across all affected hosts immediately
- Add schroot version checks to patch-management and vulnerability-scanning processes
- Review logs for repeated session-creation failures that may indicate prior exploitation attempts
The record
Schroot before 1.6.13 had too permissive rules on chroot or session names, allowing a denial of service on the schroot service for all users that may start a schroot session.
