What it actually does

The cryptographic weakness sends an unencrypted hash of plaintext data alongside ciphertext in metadata, enabling brute-force recovery of the original plaintext when the hash is accessible to an attacker.

Why it matters to the business

Older versions of affected software can leak sensitive encrypted data contents through accessible metadata, increasing risk of unauthorized disclosure and potential compliance violations across dependent systems.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with access to stored ciphertext and associated metadata extracts the plaintext hash and performs offline brute-force attempts to recover the original data; the flaw persists in unpatched versions despite upstream blocking of the metadata field.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected packages to the listed fixed versions: qemu on Debian 12 and 13 to 1:7.2+dfsg-1, and qemu-project/qemu GIT to commit d307040b18 or later.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify package versions match or exceed the fixed releases, confirm absence of the plaintext hash in metadata fields during encryption operations, and review cryptographic library changelogs for the metadata field removal.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain access to ciphertext and metadata containing the unencrypted hash
  2. Extract the hash value from the metadata field
  3. Perform brute-force or dictionary attacks against the hash to recover plaintext

How to detect it

Review application logs and stored object metadata for unexpected hash fields alongside ciphertext; monitor for brute-force patterns against hash values in forensic analysis of encrypted archives.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrades on all instances using affected qemu packages within the next 30 days given exploit availability
  • Audit encrypted data stores for legacy metadata containing plaintext hashes
  • Implement runtime checks to block or alert on unencrypted hash metadata in cryptographic operations

The record

The AWS S3 Crypto SDK sends an unencrypted hash of the plaintext alongside the ciphertext as a metadata field. This hash can be used to brute force the plaintext, if the hash is readable to the attacker. AWS now blocks this metadata field, but older SDK versions still send it.
