What it actually does

Use-after-free condition in Vim's memory management allows dangling pointers to be dereferenced during file parsing or editing operations, enabling arbitrary code execution or denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers could run malicious code on developer or administrator workstations that use Vim, potentially leading to credential theft, lateral movement, or disruption of source-code editing workflows; the issue has been public for over four years with public exploits available.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a specially formed text file that triggers the use-after-free when opened or edited in a vulnerable Vim build; once the dangling pointer is reused, the attacker gains control of the instruction pointer and executes arbitrary code under the privileges of the Vim process.

How to fix it

Upgrade Vim to a build containing commit baefde14550231f6468ac2ed2ed495bc381c0c92 or later; rebuild from source or install a patched package from the distribution; where immediate upgrade is impossible, restrict Vim usage to untrusted files only.

How to confirm the fix worked

Run 'vim --version' and confirm the build contains commit baefde14550231f6468ac2ed2ed495bc381c0c92 or a later equivalent; test with a known proof-of-concept file in an isolated environment to verify the crash or code-execution path is closed.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker prepares a malicious file designed to trigger the use-after-free in Vim
  2. Victim opens the file using a vulnerable Vim binary (local or via remote editing)
  3. Vim dereferences the freed memory object during parsing or rendering
  4. Attacker-controlled data is written into the freed region and later executed
  5. Arbitrary code runs, establishing persistence or exfiltrating data

How to detect it

Review system and process logs for unexpected Vim crashes or child-process spawns immediately after file-open events; correlate with file-access timestamps of recently edited documents.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately update all Vim installations to a version containing the referenced commit
  • Add Vim version checks to automated configuration-management and container-scanning pipelines
  • Monitor EPSS and exploit-availability feeds for any future rise in observed exploitation
  • Restrict interactive use of Vim on high-value systems until patches are deployed
