Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A bug in the popular text editor Vim can let attackers take over a computer when someone opens a specially made file, so updating the editor removes the risk.

What it actually does

Heap-based buffer overflow in Vim allows memory corruption when processing specially crafted input, enabling arbitrary code execution or denial of service on the local system.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain control of developer workstations or servers running vulnerable Vim versions, potentially leading to source code theft, supply-chain compromise, or ransomware deployment in environments where Vim is used for editing or scripting.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker creates a malicious file designed to trigger the heap overflow in Vim; when a user opens the file with the vulnerable editor (requiring user interaction), the overflow corrupts memory and allows the attacker to execute arbitrary code. Public exploits are available, though EPSS remains low with only a modest upward trend over 30 days.

How to fix it

Upgrade Vim to the fixed commit b8329db36a886355e6e9cb9986a3668fef78c438 or later release (version 9.0.0044 or newer). Rebuild from source or install updated packages from distribution repositories that incorporate this commit.

How to confirm the fix worked

Run 'vim --version' and confirm the build includes commit b8329db36a886355e6e9cb9986a3668fef78c438 or reports version 9.0.0044 or higher; test with known proof-of-concept files in a sandbox to verify the crash no longer occurs.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify target systems using Vim for file editing or development workflows
  2. Craft a malicious file that triggers the heap buffer overflow
  3. Deliver the file via email, download, or shared storage
  4. Trick the user into opening the file in the vulnerable Vim binary
  5. Exploit the resulting memory corruption to execute attacker-controlled code

How to detect it

Review system logs and process execution history for Vim crashes or unexpected child processes spawned from Vim; examine user activity around file opens that coincide with high CPU or memory anomalies; look for indicators of post-exploitation such as new binaries or network connections originating from Vim processes.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately update all Vim installations to the fixed commit or newer release
  • Scan development and CI systems for instances of Vim older than 9.0.0044
  • Restrict execution of untrusted files with Vim until patching is complete
  • Monitor EPSS and exploit availability trends for any increase in observed activity
