What it actually does
Buffer overflow due to insufficient memory handling when processing maliciously crafted web content, resulting in arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Remote attackers can fully compromise affected systems by delivering malicious web content, leading to data theft, malware deployment, or loss of control; widespread use of the affected component increases exposure across many environments despite low EPSS.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates specially crafted web content that triggers the buffer overflow during parsing; when a user processes this content, the flaw allows arbitrary code execution on the target system.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a fixed version such as curl commit 7161cb17c01dcff1dc5bf89a18437d9d729f1ecd; for Apple platforms update to macOS Monterey 12.3, Safari 15.4, iOS 15.4, iPadOS 15.4, watchOS 8.5, tvOS 15.4 or iTunes 12.12.3 for Windows.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed version matches or exceeds the listed fixed commit or Apple OS releases and test that malicious test cases no longer trigger the overflow.
Typical attack path
- Craft malicious web content exploiting the buffer overflow
- Host or deliver the content via a web page, link, or email
- Victim processes the content in the vulnerable application
- Buffer overflow is triggered leading to arbitrary code execution
How to detect it
Review application crash logs, web content processing events, and system audit trails for signs of unexpected code execution or memory corruption around the time of content rendering.
What your security team should do
- Apply the fixed version or Apple updates as soon as possible given 1486 days since publication
- Monitor EPSS trend (currently rising +26%) and reassess risk if exploit maturity increases
- Block or filter untrusted web content where feasible until patches are deployed
The record
A buffer overflow issue was addressed with improved memory handling. This issue is fixed in macOS Monterey 12.3, Safari 15.4, watchOS 8.5, iTunes 12.12.3 for Windows, iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4, tvOS 15.4. Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution.
