What it actually does

Insufficient input sanitization in mail processing allows a crafted message to inject and execute arbitrary JavaScript in the rendering context.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can run code inside a user's browser or mail client, potentially stealing session data, credentials, or performing actions on behalf of the victim on affected Apple platforms.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious email that bypasses sanitization, delivers it to the target, and triggers JavaScript execution when the message is opened in the Mail application on vulnerable Apple devices.

How to fix it

Upgrade to iOS 15.3 and iPadOS 15.3, watchOS 8.4, tvOS 15.3, Safari 15.3, or macOS Monterey 12.2 or later on all affected devices.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify device and application version numbers match or exceed the fixed releases; retest mail rendering with previously exploitable message structures after patching.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft email containing unsanitized malicious content
  2. Deliver email to target mailbox
  3. Victim opens the message in the Mail app
  4. JavaScript executes in the WebKit rendering context

How to detect it

Review mail client logs and WebKit process activity for unexpected JavaScript execution or outbound connections triggered by incoming messages; correlate with email header anomalies on mail servers.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed operating-system and browser updates across the fleet immediately
  • Disable automatic mail preview where possible until patches are deployed
  • Monitor for unusual script execution or network activity originating from the Mail process

The record

A validation issue was addressed with improved input sanitization. This issue is fixed in iOS 15.3 and iPadOS 15.3, watchOS 8.4, tvOS 15.3, Safari 15.3, macOS Monterey 12.2. Processing a maliciously crafted mail message may lead to running arbitrary javascript.
