What it actually does

The flaw in createNotificationChannel allows local callers to trigger unbounded resource allocation in the notification subsystem, exhausting memory or related handles until the device becomes unresponsive and requires factory reset for recovery.

Why it matters to the business

Devices can be rendered permanently unusable without remote access, forcing factory resets that cause data loss, user disruption, and support overhead; prevalence across Android 12/12L/13 increases fleet-wide exposure risk.

How an attack unfolds

A locally executing application invokes the vulnerable NotificationManager method repeatedly; each call allocates resources without sufficient limits, culminating in system-wide exhaustion that forces a factory reset, all without elevated privileges or user interaction.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected Android versions (12, 12L, 13) to the latest patched release that resolves the resource-exhaustion condition in NotificationManager.java; apply vendor security updates as soon as available.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm device is running a patched Android build; monitor system logs for notification-channel allocation errors and verify that repeated channel creation no longer leads to resource exhaustion or lock-up.

Typical attack path

  1. Gain local execution via a malicious or compromised application
  2. Call createNotificationChannel in a tight loop or high volume
  3. Trigger progressive resource exhaustion
  4. Force device into unusable state requiring factory reset

How to detect it

Review Android system logs (logcat) for repeated NotificationManager channel-creation entries, resource-limit warnings, or sudden unresponsiveness events; correlate with application installation timestamps.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize deployment of Android security patches to all managed devices
  • Restrict sideloading and limit app sources via enterprise policy
  • Incorporate notification-subsystem monitoring into endpoint detection rules

The record

In createNotificationChannel of NotificationManager.java, there is a possible way to make the device unusable and require factory reset due to resource exhaustion. This could lead to local denial of service with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.Product: AndroidVersions: Android-12 Android-12L Android-13Android ID: A-240422263
